Metaphor: ReFantazio Debuts on Top of Japanese Charts with Over 108,000 Units Sold

As someone who has been a part of this vibrant gaming community for decades now, I must say last week was quite a rollercoaster ride! The release of several highly anticipated titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, Silent Hill 2 remake, and the continued success of classics like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, has truly energized the gaming landscape.

The past week witnessed several significant game launches, with multiple high-profile titles hitting the market within just a few days. These newly released games are currently experiencing strong openings in Japan, according to Famitsu’s latest weekly charts that cover both physical software and hardware sales in the area.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but be impressed by the phenomenal launch of ReFantazio. In just six hours, it managed to sell over a million copies globally, with its PS5 version taking the crown and the PS4 version landing at No. 4. Together, they moved more than 108,000 units. It’s a strong start for a new IP indeed, but it doesn’t quite reach the heights set by some of Atlus’ recent heavyweights. For instance, Persona 3 Reload sold over 116,000 physical copies on its debut day, and Shin Megami Tensei 5 moved over 143,000 units when it first hit the shelves in 2021.

Last week saw the launch of “Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO”, which has been met with strong initial sales. In Japan alone, it sold more than 63,000 physical copies upon release, securing the second spot on the charts. Globally, the game managed to sell over 3 million units within its first 24 hours.

Additionally, there’s the remake of Konami and Bloober Team’s “Silent Hill 2,” which entered the marketplace in third position. This revival of a relatively low-key franchise that didn’t traditionally sell in massive quantities managed to shift more than 29,000 units initially. Impressively, it sold over a million copies globally within its first three days.

In terms of hardware sales last week, Nintendo Switch outperformed the PlayStation 5 in Japan, with approximately 55,000 units sold compared to just over 11,000 for the PS5, despite several big-name game launches.
