Metaphor: ReFantazio Director Hopes to Expand the Game Into a Series

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the success of Metaphor: ReFantazio has been nothing short of breathtaking. The game’s initial sales and accolades have set it apart from many other titles, and it’s clear that Sega and Atlus are on to something special here.

In the year 2025, ReFantazio, a game, made an incredible debut, selling over a million copies on its release day and receiving numerous nominations and awards from various sources. Sega and Atlus are undoubtedly thrilled with this launch, but there’s growing curiosity about what lies ahead for ReFantazio. In the latest edition of Weekly Famitsu Magazine, as reported by Persona Central, the game’s writer/director, Katsura Hashino, shared some lofty aspirations. Hashino hinted at a potential sequel, expressing his desire for ReFantazio to become a third series that could stand alongside Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. However, it’s important to note that no concrete decisions have been made as of now.

It’s not unexpected for fans of ReFantazio (Metaphor) to anticipate more than just one game, given that Studio Zero was established with the aim of launching a new RPG franchise. Since the game’s debut in October, players have expressed their desires for spin-offs focusing on various plotlines. Additionally, there’s speculation about another Metaphor title set in a different timeframe. In the same interview, Hashino hinted at the possibility of creating a Metaphor game set during Japan’s Sengoku period, characterized by civil war. While this idea could be intriguing, Hashino playfully suggested that it might resemble the Basara manga/anime series too closely. However, there’s a chance that Hashino may discover an original approach or opt for a completely new direction.

The overwhelmingly favorable response to Metaphor: ReFantazio increases the likelihood of a sequel and generates interest among new gamers. Over the past few years, the success of Persona has made it one of Sega’s key franchises, alongside Sonic the Hedgehog and Yakuza. These popular series have driven growth within the company, causing a resurgence in dormant franchises such as Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio. It’s plausible that Metaphor could join Sega’s primary franchises within the next few years.

Based on the incredible achievement of the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio” and Hashino’s ambition to develop it into a complete series, it’s highly likely that a sequel is in store. Although we can’t predict when it will be released, fans should stay hopeful and prepared for possible updates. Fingers crossed that Sega and Atlus won’t make us wait too long to learn more about the game’s future!
