Independent video game developer Mercury Steam has collaborated with gaming giants like Nintendo and Konami, earning recognition primarily for their Metroidvania games such as “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow,” “Metroid: Samus Returns,” and “Metroid Dread.” They’ve also branched out to develop original titles like “Spacelords.” The team’s skills have been acknowledged with “Metroid Dread” being acclaimed as one of the top games in the series. Enthusiasts who keep tabs on Mercury Steam are eager about the latest sneak peek the studio has unveiled for their upcoming project.
Mercury Steam has hinted at their upcoming game, temporarily titled “Project Iron“. In collaboration with 505 Games, they’re set to release “Project Iron“, and the tagline “Forge Your Legend” suggests a significant focus on blacksmithing within the game.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but be captivated by the tantalizing teaser unveiled by Mercury Steam. It showcases a sleek hammer casually placed upon what seems to be an anvil, with the fiery sparks of a forge within sight. The game director, Enric Álvarez, has described it as a gripping dark fantasy, immersing us in a single-player, third-person action RPG experience.
Although primarily recognized for creating 2D Metroidvania-style games, Mercury Steam has also dabbled in third-person game development, as demonstrated by their free-to-play shooter game, Spacelords. While it didn’t attract a wide audience, it was well-liked by its devoted fanbase. Regardless, this experience will undoubtedly be leveraged for the development of Project Iron.
While some may express dissatisfaction that Mercury Steam isn’t developing a new 2D “Metroid” game, enthusiasts can take solace in the fact that “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” is still slated for release on the Nintendo Switch, as confirmed by Nintendo. Moreover, there are those who continue to hold optimistic expectations that Nintendo will transfer “Metroid Prime 2” and “Metroid Prime 3” onto the Nintendo Switch as well.
Mercury Steam hinted at Project Iron today, with further details set to be unveiled during the IGN Fan Fest starting February 24th and lasting for several days. The exact date of Mercury Steam’s reveal for their upcoming game remains undisclosed, but we won’t have to wait much longer until then.
Recently, it has become clear that single-player games have a tremendous potential for success. For instance, the upcoming game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offers a gripping dark fantasy experience with a realistic touch, and managed to sell over a million copies shortly after its release. Similarly, Baldur’s Gate 3 saw impressive sales figures and garnered widespread acclaim.
Should Mercury Steam manage to replicate this level of success, Project Iron will undoubtedly be a game worth watching. Given the reputation of Metroid Dread, Project Iron holds great potential, and we’re eagerly anticipating the fruits of Mercury Steam’s labor.
Apart from “Project Iron,” it’s also been disclosed that Mercury Storm has another secret project in the works, as per Nordisk Film’s earnings report. While “Project Iron” is about to be unveiled, the details of Mercury Steam’s second, enigmatic project are yet undisclosed, so fans will just have to wait patiently for more information.
