On Monday, there was an abundance of intriguing news concerning the DC Universe. One peculiar, outdated tale that caught my attention was the attempt by Warner Bros. Pictures to initiate a standalone Superman film in 2022, starring Henry Cavill and directed by Michael Bay. It’s worth noting that Bay has not previously ventured into the realm of superhero movies. However, two reliable sources informed The Wrap that this proposal was indeed on the table for 2022. Strikingly, in the same year, Bay expressed interest in directing a superhero movie but not within a sprawling, ongoing franchise. This raises questions about what his potential contribution to the DCEU would have been and why the project ultimately didn’t materialize.
Last Monday’s analysis on ‘Superman’ and the DC Universe delved into the historical journey of DC Comics adaptations on the silver screen, focusing on efforts to blend this heritage with the current prosperous structure of the MCU. The review highlighted key adjustments within Warner Bros. in recent times, specifically mentioning the shift in DC executives. In 2022, DC Films experienced a brief period under the leadership of Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy from Warner Bros. Pictures, a phase that followed Walter Hamada’s departure and preceded the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
During that period, there was no final decision made about revamping the DCEU to establish a new continuity. Instead, De Luca and Abdy were considering creating a straight-forward Superman film as an interim project, one that wouldn’t be linked to other productions or involve complex crossovers like a full-scale Justice League production would. It was mentioned that they might have considered Michael Bay for director, but the extent of any deal remains uncertain.
It’s even more unexpected given that in the same year, Bay expressed: “I’m not saying I’m not interested in Marvel, but as Ridley Scott suggests, creating a new world is both the most challenging and enjoyable task for a director. I wouldn’t fit into Lucas’ Star Wars to make Star Wars 5. That’s not my style. I’m not the one to jump into Iron Man 7 or Batman 10. I prefer to work on my own projects. I’d love to delve into a superhero universe, but I want to do it under my own conditions and construct my own world.
It seems that having Bay on board for the DCEU might not have been ideal, given its extensive history and continuity. Yet, producers De Luca and Abdy may have intended to provide Bay with creative flexibility using a “soft reboot” strategy, which would have allowed him to break away from the franchise without replacing Cavill. This concept was widely supported among DC fans, as it mirrored the success of standalone films like Joker and The Batman that weren’t directly connected to the established universe.
In 2022, I became part of the team that took over Warner Bros. Discovery, and since then, we’ve been working diligently to restructure DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. It’s been a journey to get our DC Universe off the ground, but this summer, we’re excited to bring it to life on the big screen with the release of Superman, set for July 25th.
