Michael Bolton is determined to go the distance.
Over a year since Michael, who’s 72 years old, revealed his brain tumor diagnosis (later identified as glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive type of brain cancer), he is now discussing his experiences living with this illness.
He shared with People in an April 30th interview, “You’re delving into your strengths and determination more deeply than you ever imagined.” He continued, “Giving up to this challenge is not a choice. Instead, it seems like you’re being pulled into a fierce contest. That’s how you discover one’s true mettle.
Following an emergency operation in December 2023 that successfully removed a tumor from my brain, I underwent a subsequent brain surgery due to an infection, followed by radiation and chemotherapy treatments, which I completed in October. Now, I get MRIs every two months to keep an eye out for the tumor reoccurring, and according to the latest report, my most recent scan appears clean.
Throughout this, he’s requested that doctors refrain from disclosing his diagnosis or outlook, preferring instead to maintain a hopeful attitude.
He mentioned that he tends to feel at ease more generally, and this whole encounter has deepened his sense of gratitude. It’s hard for him to imagine not seizing life’s opportunities. He believes that as we grow, we acquire skills in dealing with challenges, learn how to extract positivity from negative situations, and develop an ability to maximize our lives.
He continued, “You have to be a cheerleader for yourself.”
The encounter has influenced how this singer, who is a father of daughters Isa, Holly, and Taryn, and thus a grandfather to six children, now perceives the kind of inheritance he wants to pass on. This extends beyond the tangible legacy he’s already established through his musical creations.
He pondered over how to provide things that his daughters could carry forward. He wanted to impart life lessons, shower them with love, and offer any form of affirmation – he strived to do it all in a way that would make them proud of themselves.
He remarked, “Mortality is a fact. The extinguishing of a light makes one ponder, such as ‘Am I making the most out of my time?’
For the six-time Grammy winner, he’s resolute on maximizing the length of his remaining years.
He shared that he intends to continue his efforts, expressing the sense that there’s much more work to be done in the struggle. He also mentioned that he has come up with a title for a song, “I Won’t Give Up Without A Fight.
Taryn pointed out that they’ll be alongside him throughout his journey, as she said, “We’re a team, all the way.
