Michael Caine remembers advice Tom Cruise asked him for 40 years ago

As a seasoned movie connoisseur with a lifelong passion for celluloid dreams, I find myself both captivated and intrigued by the anecdote of the legendary Michael Caine mentoring none other than the enigmatic Tom Cruise. The image of these two titans of cinema, one a pioneer of the golden age and the other a modern-day maverick, sharing words of wisdom is almost too fantastical to fathom.

Despite his current high-profile status, it’s intriguing to consider a moment when Tom Cruise sought guidance – a fact recently disclosed by Michael Caine. He shared that the star of Top Gun and Mission: Impossible approached him for advice on maintaining success in the movie world.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, the esteemed British actor reminisced about a past encounter over four decades back, during which he first crossed paths with Tom Cruise as the budding star was making his way in the entertainment industry, to publicize the launch of his latest memoir titled Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over.

“I turned around and there was this young actor, very polite, asking questions about how not to be just a flash in the pan,” he explained. “That was Tom, probably around the time of Risky Business.”

Despite not clearly remembering the specific advice he gave, Caine acknowledged that whatever it was certainly didn’t seem to hurt him (Cruise). Additionally, he recalled that it was evident back then that Cruise was destined for stardom.

He commented, “There was an extraordinary quality about him.” He possessed an exceptional demeanor and grace. What intrigues me is that he embodies the rare essence of a genuine movie star. Audiences flock to his films merely because he’s involved. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman share some of these qualities, too. Unfortunately, there are very few like him now – not since the days of John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, or Cary Grant.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the illustrious career of Sir Michael Caine, who, at the ripe age of 91, has undeniably shone brightly on the silver screen for more than a century, gracing over 150 films with his unparalleled talent. His final cinematic bow will be in “The Great Escaper,” set to hit theaters in 2023, marking the end of an era for one of Hollywood’s most esteemed and beloved actors.

He mentioned that many veteran actors during the COVID period were uncertain about returning to the stage or set. Consequently, he believes there was a remarkable surge of vitality.

Currently, Cruise remains among the top and busiest movie stars globally. Notably, they’ve just completed filming for the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible series.

One of his most notable roles includes Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, Minority Report, Edge of Tomorrow, and numerous others.

Although both Michael Caine and Tom Cruise have illustrious careers, they share only one joint credit – the 2003 Austin Powers film, Goldmember. In this movie, an unexpected collaboration occurred: Michael Caine portrayed Austin Powers’ father, Nigel Powers, while Cruise made a brief appearance as Austin in the movie-within-a-movie that initiates the storyline.
