Michael Cera Reunites with Edgar Wright for Breathless Arnold Schwarzenegger Reboot

2025 finds Michael Cera swamped with projects. He’s part of an illustrious cast in Wes Anderson’s movie titled “The Phoenician Scheme“, and later in the year, he’ll join forces once more with Edgar Wright, the director of “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World“, for a remake of the ’80s action film “The Running Man”. This will be their first collaboration since the blockbuster hit “Scott Pilgrim“. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook, Cera expressed his enthusiasm for “The Running Man“, set to release in theaters this November. He hinted that the experience would be a thrilling, unrelenting ride.

Originally in the 1987 movie “The Running Man,” Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed Ben Richards, a police officer wrongfully accused who had to fight for his life on a TV show in a future America. In the upcoming reboot, Glen Powell (known for films like “Twisters” and “Hit Man”) takes over as Ben Richards. Details about Cera’s character are scarce, but according to director Wright, the new film is said to be quite distinct from the original one.

Cera Calls Wright’s The Running Man Reboot a “Really Fun Ride”

Cera shared with ComicBook that “The Running Man” is “absolutely wild! I can’t wait for everyone to experience it. I can hardly contain my own excitement to watch it. While I can only discuss my part, Edgar gave me a sneak peek of other scenes, and it looks like an exhilarating journey. This movie is relentless; it never slows down. It’s like a rocket launching and just doesn’t stop.

In a new adaptation, Zoe Cera will portray a character who is innocent yet rebellious, aiming to assist Powell’s persona. Interestingly, the movie “The Running Man” is based on a Stephen King novel published under the pen name Richard Bachman in 1982 and set in the year 2025. Given Wright’s knack for blending action, mystery, and dark comedy, he seems ideal to breathe life into this updated version of “The Running Man” in a world that increasingly resembles a dystopia. Apart from Powell and Cera, “The Running Man” will also star Colman Domingo, Katy O’Brian, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, and William H. Macy.

Cera’s Role in The Phoenician Scheme Mirrors His Part in The Running Man

In the movie titled “The Phoenician Scheme“, Cera takes on the role of Bjorn Lund, a Norwegian entomologist hired by Zsa-zsa Korda, played by Benicio del Toro, to educate his nine sons. An unexpected romance develops between him and her daughter, portrayed by Mia Threapleton, who is a nun. Notable stars like Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Willem Dafoe, Rupert Friend, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Bill Murray are also part of auteur Anderson’s newest heist film. Despite the contrast between Anderson and Wright’s directing techniques, it’s intriguing that Cera portrays an innocent and kind character in both films. Cera has a clear understanding of his image, but the variety of roles ensures a unique performance each time and helps him avoid being stereotyped.

On May 30th, “The Phoenician Scheme” will debut in select theaters, expanding to cinemas nationwide on June 6th. Meanwhile, “Edgar Wright’s The Running Man” is set for release on November 7th.
