As a seasoned sports enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming 2024 Olympics promises to be an exhilarating spectacle of human spirit and athletic prowess. The diversity of events, from fencing to swimming, gymnastics to rowing, showcases the incredible talent and determination of our global athletes.
Michael Phelps isn’t freestyling his constructive criticism to Team USA’s swimmers.
As a die-hard admirer and history-making athlete who amassed an astounding 28 medals, 23 of them gold, during my Olympic career, I’ve just shared some frank insights about how my fellow Team USA swimmers performed at the 2024 Olympics.
He shared with USA Today on August 5 that he felt quite let down by the swimming performance of the United States.
The 39-year-old mentioned that the team had some impressive swims, specifically highlighting Bobby Finke‘s achievement in the 1500-meter freestyle. Not only did he clinch the gold medal, but he also broke a new world record in the process.
“He was prepared,” Michael added. “Hopefully the other athletes are more prepared going into ’28.”
As a former athlete who has competed in international competitions, I can attest to the importance of being prepared for any challenge that comes your way. With my personal experience participating in events like the Olympics, I understand the level of dedication, training, and preparation required to represent one’s country on the global stage. Given this, it is essential for Team USA to be well-prepared for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, as more and more countries are stepping up their game and closing the gap between themselves and Team USA. I wholeheartedly believe that by being diligent in our preparations, we can ensure a successful and memorable performance at the games.
He’s been emphasizing for quite some time now, “The world is quickly following our lead.” It seems that many of the achievements and strategies we’ve implemented as a nation are being replicated by others. Here’s hoping we can smoothly adapt to these changes, moving forward towards 2028.
As a devoted father to Boomer (8), Beckett (6), Maverick (4), and our little Nico (6 months), alongside my wife, Nicole Phelps, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of a talented swimmer who may strive to surpass my Olympic records.
He shared, “At the time, everyone believed my endeavor to be unachievable. If someone were attempting it today, you’d likely consider it an impossible task as well.”
However, just like he expressed, “records were designed for surpassing.” The records I’ve been pursuing during my entire career served as my inspiration. I hope, in turn, that I might inspire someone else to strive for the same.
At the Olympics in Paris, Team USA broke three world records and amassed a grand total of 28 medals (eight gold, thirteen silver, and seven bronze). Among these, Katie Ledecky earned four golds, while Torri Huske took home three. In the end, they won ten more medals than any other nation, which made their coaches incredibly proud of their achievements.
Todd DeSorbo, women’s head coach, expressed his positive sentiments through USASwimming.com. He found the meet exceptional, stating, “There was a lot of chatter about a sluggish pool, but numerous Olympic records were broken by all nations, including the U.S. It’s fantastic to emerge victorious in both the gold and overall medal tallies.”
He explained that this is a “young team, with a lot of ups and downs,” but was still impressed that they still managed to be the best.
And men’s head coach Anthony Nesty added, as coaches, “we always want to be better.”
He went on to say that the gathering was focused on being robust, bouncing back from setbacks, and continuously improving in each session. In my opinion, we found our rhythm during the latter part of the event, and this was reflected in the outcomes.
