Michael Tait is taking accountability.
Following numerous accusations of sexual misconduct and drug use, levied against him by several individuals from as early as 2004 to 2014, the singer of the Newsboys addressed these claims directly.
In a statement posted on Instagram on June 10th, he admitted that the allegations of his irresponsible and damaging actions, such as drug and alcohol misuse, sexual misconduct, and inappropriate physical contact with others, are generally accurate. For over twenty years, he engaged in excessive cocaine use, drank heavily, and on occasion, made unwanted advances towards men in a sensual manner.
In response, the four-time Grammy award recipient acknowledged and admitted to being accountable for the events as detailed in the initial articles, which initially surfaced on The Roys Report on June 4th, a Christian news platform.
Tait admitted, “I regret my life decisions and actions without offering any explanations. Instead, I refer to them as what I believe God labels as wrongdoings – sins. I don’t point fingers at others or circumstances but accept full responsibility. While there might be some details in the accusations that I question, I have no issues acknowledging their underlying truth.
Moreover, the 59-year-old mentioned that he has made efforts to change his actions. For instance, in January, he chose to depart from Newsboys, allowing Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein, and Adam Agee to continue as band members.
Tait explained why he left the Christian rock band, stating, “I needed assistance.” He confessed that his physical and spiritual health were both deteriorating, and he was exhausted from living a secretive lifestyle. For approximately six weeks, he sought aid at a treatment facility in Utah, which could have prevented a catastrophic downfall for him.
Previously from DC Talk, the lead vocalist confessed to being abstinent from substances and clean since then. However, he acknowledged there is still much effort required in his journey. He also expressed that he will always carry the burden of leading two contrasting lifestyles with shame.
In his own words, “I’ve caused harm to countless individuals in various manners, a fact that I must carry with me as a heavy burden for the remainder of my days. I can merely hope and wish for understanding and pardon from others, as I know full well that I am far from deserving it.
He went on to express that he acknowledges the possibility that only God can offer complete and unwavering forgiveness for his wrongdoings. Nevertheless, he feels compelled to apologize sincerely to every person he has caused harm. His heartfelt regret is genuine.
Just under a week prior to Tait’s confession, The Roys Report released an exposé implicating Tait in allegations of sexual assault and drug abuse. This report was substantiated by more than 50 sources, among whom were three men who claimed that they had endured unwanted sexual advances from Tait when they were young adults.
Since the report’s release, Tait’s Newsboy bandmates have also spoken out on the allegations.
Last night, we were deeply saddened upon learning accusations about drug misuse and inappropriate behavior involving Michael Tait, our ex-lead singer. Above all, our thoughts are with those who have courageously spoken out about their experiences. To any victims, please know that we strongly encourage you to speak up if you haven’t already.
They added, “We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault.”
