Michelle Obama is continuing to lay low in 2025.
Following the absence of the former first lady and spouse to Barack Obama at Jimmy Carter’s funeral on January 7th, a representative for the couple clarified that she would also not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on January 20th.
According to a statement made by their representative to TopMob News, it has been confirmed that the former President, Barack Obama, will participate in the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. However, his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, has chosen not to attend the upcoming inauguration.
At Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, it has been reported that former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with their spouses Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, will be in attendance. This information was shared by their respective representatives to the AP. It should also be noted that President Joe Biden confirmed last month through Reuters that he would be attending as well.
Additionally, it has been confirmed that country singer Carrie Underwood will perform “America the Beautiful” during the event. This means she will also join in the proceedings.
The former contestant from American Idol expressed their gratitude for being invited to perform at the Inauguration, stating that it’s an honor to be a tiny piece of such a momentous occasion. They feel deeply humbled by the opportunity to contribute during a time when we should all strive to unite and look forward as one nation.
TopMob News has contacted representatives for the Obamas about Michelle’s impending unavailability, but we haven’t received a response yet.
Michelle’s confirmed upcoming absence follows a week when she was absent at Carter’s memorial, making her the sole spouse of a former leader who wasn’t present. Previous presidents Obama, Trump, and Melania Trump, as well as the Bushes and Clintons, attended, along with President Biden, Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.
Despite this historic gathering being the first time all living ex-presidents came together since 2018, it was Michelle who was absent, having extended her vacation in Hawaii, as Jeff Zeleny of CNN had shared earlier.
During Michelle’s absence, Obama displayed a warm demeanor among the ex-national leaders. In the memorial video, the 44th president—who has Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23 (their daughters with Michelle)—had an engaging conversation with Trump for quite some time. He also approached former president Bush, who playfully tapped his stomach before settling down. This interaction, unsurprisingly, sparked a lot of online attention.
Although she couldn’t attend the memorial service, Michelle still expressed her respect for the late ex-president Carter who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, by issuing a shared statement with her husband.
The Carters expressed that President Carter embodied living with elegance, integrity, fairness, and altruism in a statement they posted on Instagram December 29th. Michelle and I extend our well-wishes and sympathies to the Carter family and everyone who knew and benefited from this exceptional individual.
