The world of entertainment is grieving the passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, a well-loved actress recognized for her roles in Harriet the Spy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gossip Girl. Unfortunately, she was discovered unconscious in her New York City apartment on February 26, 2025. At first, the reason behind her death remained unknown due to her family’s religious objections to an autopsy. However, Deadline reported on April 16, 2025, that the cause of Trachtenberg’s death had been disclosed. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner informed People magazine that she died as a result of complications related to diabetes mellitus, classifying her death as natural.
In the years preceding her passing, Trachtenberg experienced severe health complications. Towards the end of 2024, she underwent a liver transplant. As per People’s reports, she was open about her struggles with close friends. According to various sources, she led a secluded life and grappled with critical health problems, showing visible signs of illness such as paleness and weight loss.

After her passing, countless tributes were shared by both co-stars and fans, with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who portrayed her older sister on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, expressing her feelings through an emotional Instagram post. She uploaded a picture of them together, quoting a touching line from the show’s finale: “Michelle, pay attention to me. Pay attention. I love you. I will always love you. The most difficult thing in this world is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live.

In the initial stages of her career, Trachtenberg gained recognition by portraying the eccentric character Nona F. Mecklenberg in 14 episodes of the popular Nickelodeon sitcom “The Adventures of Pete & Pete“. Following this, she continued her association with Nickelodeon, taking on the lead role in the 1996 film “Harriet the Spy“. Trachtenberg then moved on to star in significant ’90s films like Disney’s “Inspector Gadget” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as Dawn Summers. Throughout the 2000s, she acted in various television series such as “Six Feet Under” and “Gossip Girl”. One of her last roles was a guest appearance in the rebooted animated version of “Harriet the Spy“.
