Michigan Woman Eaten by Shark on Vacation in Indonesia

As a dedicated follower of underwater adventures and a long-time friend of the Monfores, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of sorrow and disbelief upon hearing about Colleen’s untimely demise. Having spent countless hours beneath the waves alongside these incredible explorers, I’ve come to admire not only their skills as divers but also their unwavering passion for the ocean and its wonders.

One woman’s vacation has ended in tragedy.

68-year-old Colleen Monfore went on a trip to Indonesia with companions. During a diving adventure on September 26, she became separated from her group and was reported missing. Two weeks later, her remains were discovered inside the stomach of a shark, as confirmed by friend Rick Sass to the New York Post.

According to Rick, authorities were able to match fingerprints on the remains to those of Colleen.

However, although there were suspicions that the Michigan women might have perished due to a shark attack, Colleen’s closest companions – including her spouse Mike and Rick – are convinced that she encountered a medical predicament during her time in the water.

TopMob News has reached out to Indonesian authorities for comment but has not yet heard back.

At present, it’s uncertain if Colleen had any pre-existing health issues related to diving, and the exact reason for her demise remains undetermined.

Based on Rick’s account, after he and his wife Kim – who had operated a dive shop for more than four decades together – scrutinized pictures from the dive, consulted with Mike and analyzed information from the dive computer, they are convinced that Colleen did not die as a result of a shark attack.

Besides the fact that Colleen was submerged in water no deeper than approximately 24 feet and still had more than half her tank of air remaining, Kim mentioned in a Facebook post that the strong undercurrent was “controllable” during the described event.

She wrote, “I’ve effortlessly completed over a thousand dives with this gracious lady.” I can assure you, it wasn’t the underwater world or a shark that took her life.

Rick mentioned about Colleen and Mike, ‘Over the past thirty years, they took countless journeys with us, to places like Bali, the Philippines, even Bikini Atoll. She’s always been quite skilled.’

Rich also noted how rare shark attacks are against divers.

He clarified, “Sharks aren’t as dangerous as people might think. I’ve swum with hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, and even bull sharks. They require respect and caution, but remember, they generally don’t initiate unprovoked attacks.

In high school, Colleen and Mike first crossed paths, as reported by the newspaper. It was then that Mike initiated Colleen into the realm of scuba diving. Over the years, they raised two children together and were later blessed with four grandchildren. As time passed, they continued to journey through life and the depths of the ocean hand in hand.

Rick mentioned that they both led contented lives in retirement. He fondly referred to his late friend as ‘Saint Colleen,’ emphasizing what a remarkable person she was.

He added, “She cherished nature and creatures. There’s no doubt in my mind that she wouldn’t have held a shark responsible for this unfortunate event.
