What you need to know
- Microsoft 365, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and the Microsoft Store are all down right now for many.
- Outage reports started rising around 8 AM ET and rose dramatically by 12 PM ET.
- Microsoft identified the issue that caused the outage and is rolling out a fix, but many can still not access Microsoft services as of 12:40 PM ET.
As a seasoned researcher with years of experience monitoring tech outages, I’ve seen my fair share of Microsoft hiccups, but today’s fiasco takes the cake. The timing couldn’t have been worse – right when folks were gearing up for their workweek. It’s like Microsoft set its alarm clock to 8 AM ET instead of turning off its servers!
Users of Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Microsoft Teams had a disappointing start to their week as these popular services were experiencing issues. DownDetector, a platform that tracks service outages by gathering user reports, showed a significant increase in problems with these services starting from around 8 AM ET, with the peak occurring closer to noon.
Earlier this morning at approximately 4 AM Eastern Time, some troubles were reported, which coincided with Microsoft initiating an investigation. However, it seems that the problems escalated significantly around 8 AM ET. It’s likely that the surge in reports of outages corresponded with people logging in for work to kick off the week.
Microsoft stated on their Microsoft 365 Status page, around 9:06 AM Eastern Time, that they’re looking into a problem affecting users who are trying to access Exchange Online or calendar features within Microsoft Teams, following an increase in outage reports.
After identifying the root cause, Microsoft implemented a solution to rectify the problem. They managed to pinpoint the reason behind the downtime and are currently distributing a remedy for this issue. Due to persistent reports of outages on DownDetector, the rollout is happening gradually.
We’ve initiated a solution that is making its way through the problematic system. Meanwhile, we’re commencing manual reboots on a portion of machines that are not functioning properly. For further details, consult MO941162 in the admin hub. (November 25, 2024)
As a tech enthusiast, I’m excited to share that, by 11:51 PM ET, Microsoft reported that their patch had been installed in nearly 98% of the impacted systems. That means we’re getting close to having most of the affected environments secure!
This is an ongoing story, and we will update this piece as more information becomes available.
