‘Microsoft Alarmed: Avowed Looks Like Massive Failure’

It seems that the action role-playing video game Avowed, created by Obsidian Entertainment and launched just last month on both PC and Xbox, is experiencing a significant setback or underperformance in terms of popularity or sales.

It’s been noted that the player base is remarkably small. This concerns both Obsidian and their overseeing company, Microsoft, as the number of players and sales have not reached expected levels, failing to cover the game’s substantial production costs, estimated at over $100 million. Despite significant marketing efforts, such as ads in Times Square, the game has yet to see the desired success.

What happened?

It seems that Avowed, which is part of the gaming industry influenced by diversity and inclusion (DEI) advocates, is being criticized as another disappointment. Originally, it was said to require players to use specific pronouns, however, after receiving negative feedback, Obsidian changed this feature, offering a setting to turn off these pronouns. Critics also find issue with the character designs, but that’s only the start of the controversy.

The art director of Avowed was criticized by Elon Musk on platform X over accusations of illegal hiring methods. Musk also addressed Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, emphasizing that such actions are unlawful. Matt Hansen, the art director in question, allegedly refused to hire white individuals, which is considered racial discrimination. Later, Hansen made fun of Musk on Bluesky. Users on X suggested that if any white developers were denied jobs at Obsidian Entertainment due to these practices, they could potentially file a lawsuit against Microsoft.

Microsoft alarmed

After facing various debates, the game named “Avowed” was eventually launched. Notably, according to influential gaming figure Grummz who often criticizes the ‘woke’ movement in gaming, the number of players for this game remains relatively small.

According to Grummz’s tweet, there were rumors that Microsoft was content with the initial sales figures, yet both Microsoft and Obsidian were taken aback when the sales dropped off faster than anticipated.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “I’ve got to say, with all that cash poured into flashy 3D animations in iconic locations like Times Square, I was expecting more bang for my buck. The performance seems a tad underwhelming.

Gamers rejecting the DEI-infused woke agenda

Should Avowed not succeed, it will join the ranks of other contentious games that have failed, such as Dustborn, Dragon Age – Veilguard, Concord, and Flintlock.

Well, I just found out that Star Wars Outlaws didn’t exactly take off, and it seems like it’s not all sunshine in the galaxy of gaming for Warner Bros. Their latest release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, didn’t quite deliver the results they were hoping for, leading to a reported $200 million loss. And guess what? The much-anticipated Star Wars Eclipse game, with its promising diversity, seems to have met an unfortunate end as well, according to reports. Bummer, right?
