As a tech enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Microsoft’s latest move to integrate Windows 11 with Meta Quest headsets is nothing short of revolutionary. Having dabbled in VR for a while now, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of seamlessly streaming my PC into my virtual environment.
Previously hinted at by Meta in September, Microsoft has now officially revealed a closer connection between Windows 11 and Meta Quest virtual reality headsets. This new integration was presented during its Ignite 2024 event. Consequently, users of Meta Quest devices can expect a user-friendly process to pair their Windows 11 PC with their VR space on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S, allowing for smooth streaming directly into their virtual reality environment.
This function is described as being compatible with PCs within your immediate environment or through cloud services like Windows 365, allowing you to access Windows 11 using virtual displays that can be customized in size and position according to your preferences in your VR (Virtual Reality) environment. Microsoft has announced that this feature will enter its preview phase next month, specifically during December.
Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s CVP of Windows & Devices, mentioned in a blog post that “Windows for mixed reality” will offer the complete functionalities of Windows 11 on mixed reality headsets, initially with the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. This means you can effortlessly access your local PC or cloud-based PC through a Quest headset, and connecting to a powerful, large, high-quality, multi-monitor workstation is swift and easy.
Microsoft’s collaboration with Meta seems to be deepening, as they introduce Windows 11 to the Meta Quest. Microsoft Mesh, which allows for VR Teams meetings on the Quest, is already part of this partnership. Additionally, online Microsoft Office applications can be found in the Quest store.
Microsoft has stopped producing its HoloLens 2 augmented reality device following years of development, suggesting that they might be choosing collaboration over self-construction in the virtual reality sector moving forward.
