In May 2023, Microsoft unveiled an application named “Dev Home” for developers within Windows 11. This app simplifies the process of setting up a development environment by allowing easy installation of various coding tools. Additionally, it enables seamless linking with Github repositories to facilitate easier management and coding for multiple projects.
It seems Microsoft intends to phase out the app soon, as it has only been around for about two years. A recent update to the app includes a notice at the top of the interface suggesting this change.
We’re saying goodbye to Dev Home in May 2025, but some of its key functions will be relocated elsewhere. Keep an eye out for further updates over the coming months.
As a researcher, I find myself in a situation where I’ve discovered that the entire Dev Home app is set to be discontinued by May 2025. This means that the specific components within the app are not specified and their future locations remain undetermined. Consequently, developers who rely on this platform should start exploring alternative solutions without delay.
Beyond catering exclusively to developers, this application has been a game-changer for me, as it introduced user-friendly system widgets. Now, I can effortlessly keep tabs on my CPU, RAM, and GPU usage right on my Windows 11 Widgets Board, making monitoring performance an easy task. When first unveiled, Microsoft referred to this app as a tool that empowers users like me to stay informed about the inner workings of our systems.
In Windows 11, “Dev Home” offers a fresh, streamlined work environment tailored to developers. It includes beneficial features like WinGet setup for effortless and swift configuration, Dev Drive for optimized filesystem speed, and a customizable dashboard to manage all your tasks and workflows in one location. With Dev Home, connecting to GitHub is simple, allowing you to set up your machine for coding on the repositories that matter most to you. It also facilitates the installation of essential tools and packages with ease. Additionally, Dev Home can configure coding environments in the cloud using Microsoft Dev Box and GitHub Codespaces.
The application offers additional tools like a Hosts File Editor and a contemporary Registry Editor, simplifying the process of establishing a virtual workspace for software development and experimentation. Fingers crossed that these functionalities persist even after the Dev Home app ceases to exist later this summer.
