Microsoft Clipchamp will soon improve images and audio with AI

What you need to know

  • Microsoft’s video editor Clipchamp will soon support noise suppression and image background removal.
  • Both of the features use AI to improve audio files and images within video projects.
  • The features appear to be rolling out gradually but should make their way to anyone using a personal account in the near future.

As a seasoned researcher and a passionate video editor who has spent countless hours fine-tuning American football highlight reels, I am thrilled about Microsoft’s latest updates to Clipchamp. Having used various video editing tools over the years, I can attest that the integration of AI in noise suppression and image background removal is a game-changer for us content creators.

On Windows 11, you’ll find Clipchamp, a built-in video editor. It’s accessible online and on iOS devices too, though not yet Android. Although it comes preloaded on numerous computers, Microsoft needs to step up its promotion efforts for this app. Often, when I discuss editing my American football highlight reels with others, they’re unfamiliar with Clipchamp. However, the upcoming features might pique interest, as the app will soon utilize AI technology to enhance audio files and images.

In a blog post on the Microsoft 365 Insiders platform, it was revealed that improvements such as noise reduction and automatic background replacement will soon be available in Clipchamp. These innovative features employ artificial intelligence (AI) to refine content and offer new resources for video production.

Reducing background noise in audio tracks enhances clarity by making the main speaker or sound more prominent within the video clip. This functionality applies to any video portion containing an audio track.

Improving the quality of your audio can be achieved by using top-quality microphones, especially when conditions aren’t ideal for recording. For instance, the environment might have disruptive sounds like a bustling street or a noisy air conditioner. Noise reduction technology is designed to tackle such issues, resulting in a more clear and focused voice recording.

Removing the background from an image proves beneficial for creating standalone shots or incorporating graphics into videos. Furthermore, these background-free images can be seamlessly combined with other images or videos.

The Microsoft blog post announces that everyone using a personal Microsoft account can access noise reduction and image background elimination features, but I haven’t found these tools yet. It seems like they might be releasing slowly. Noise suppression is also being released gradually for users with work accounts, while image background removal should already be accessible to those who have work accounts.
