According to reports from Windows Central, Microsoft‘s primary store in London, known as the “Experience Centre,” will be shutting down next month. A spokesperson for the company stated that “In order to better align with its emphasis on digital expansion, Microsoft has chosen to terminate its lease at the London Experience Centre ahead of schedule.
As a researcher, I’ve had the privilege of being part of the team that unveiled the expansive 21,000 square foot Microsoft Store in London back in July 2019. This store was meticulously designed to serve as a central hub for cutting-edge technology, both from Microsoft and our valued partners. It offers an impressive display of top-tier hardware from third-party Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), along with the newest innovations from Surface and Xbox lines.
The store additionally had a Help Center and service section, designed for Surface and Xbox users to visit if they encountered any technical issues with their devices. Unfortunately, as the only brick-and-mortar location is shutting down, this will no longer serve as a means of in-person support for customers using Surface PCs or Xbox consoles.
Despite being situated in a highly-trafficked spot on London’s Oxford Street, it appears that the Microsoft Store has not attracted many visitors since its opening. A Microsoft representative shared, “We regularly assess our locations and workforce to align with market trends and adapt accordingly to meet business requirements.
Beyond serving as both a retail outlet and an interactive hub, Microsoft additionally utilized this location for conducting business meetings with associates and collaborators. Across its three levels, the ground and first floors catered to retail activities, while the topmost floor was dedicated to conference rooms that the corporation often employed for their meetings.
Closing down the Microsoft Store in the UK represents another setback for Microsoft’s consumer-oriented products and services, as they will no longer have a physical presence in London. Over the past few years, Microsoft has been gradually reducing its focus on Surface and consumer initiatives, and the UK store is the most recent example of this trend.
