Microsoft Edge‘s user interface has become noticeably quicker, with the browser now boasting a First Contentful Paint (FCP) speed of under 300 milliseconds.
The graph depicting the speed at which UI elements load in Edge represents a significant achievement for the Edge development team, as reported by Lisa Klink, a key product manager at Microsoft, in her latest blog post.
We’ve established a challenging performance goal based on industry findings suggesting that delays beyond 300 to 400 milliseconds for initial content can greatly affect user satisfaction. By achieving this crucial benchmark, we guarantee that frequently used browser functions will appear instantly, allowing you to interact with the content more quickly.
Klink clarified that since February of this year, the Edge team has managed to decrease loading times by approximately 40%, with noticeable enhancements visible in 13 different browser features such as Settings, Text-to-Speech, Split Screen mode, and Workspaces.
The blog post highlights the following improvements:
- Settings: you can now more quickly load and navigate to the browser settings and customize your browsing experience.
- Read aloud: to experience AI-powered reading of webpages in more languages, accents, and voices—all with reduced startup time and smoother playback.
- Split screen: effortlessly switch between tasks and windows with near-instant navigation and less loading delays.
- Workspaces: from the moment you open a page, tasks feel more responsive and intuitive, allowing you to dive into your work without delay.
Speed enhancements are due to integrating WebUI 2.0, a structure that minimizes the size of code packages and reduces the quantity of JavaScript code necessary for initializing user interface components.
The Microsoft Edge developers frequently emphasize enhancements made to their web browser. In April, they announced that Edge was approximately 9% quicker based on Speedometer 3.0 tests. Various features within Edge have been created with the aim of enhancing performance, including energy-saving tabs and a startup speed-up function.
As an analyst, I anticipate noticeable enhancements in the performance of various aspects within Edge in the upcoming months. Based on updates from the Edge team, we can expect improvements in features such as Print Preview, Extensions, and other browser components.
