Microsoft Edge Joins Chrome in Blocking uBlock Origin: What You Need to Know!

It seems that the time for uBlock Origin may be coming to an end, particularly on browsers based on Chromium. This week, it was reported that uBlock Origin stopped functioning in Google Chrome. More recently, identical reports indicate that uBlock Origin has been deactivated in Microsoft Edge.

The Windows Report encountered a message on Edge which indicated that two extensions, including uBlock Origin, had been deactivated. Since these inactive extensions are no longer being maintained, Edge suggests disabling them for better functionality.

It was understood that Edge would eventually discontinue support for certain extensions, but Microsoft’s statement about the matter included “To Be Determined” regarding their schedule. However, it appears that Microsoft has set a deadline now, as uBlock Origin is currently being blocked in Microsoft Edge for some users.

Why is uBlock Origin being removed?

Given that a significant portion of Google’s earnings stems from advertising, you might have thought the discontinuation of uBlock Origin was due to some targeted attack. However, it’s challenging to understand the reasons behind Google’s decisions. The termination of support for uBlock Origin, instead, is linked to issues concerning security and performance.

In the past, Google unveiled Manifest V3, an upgraded edition of their extension framework. This new version boasts enhanced security, privacy, and improved performance. However, one crucial API necessary for uBlock Origin’s operation cannot be fully utilized by extensions created on this platform.

In the updated version, Manifest V3, the functionality of the WebRequest API that enables content blockers to prevent ads and other content from being loaded is restricted.

Due to constraints on WebRequest V3, the selection tool in uBlock Origin fails to function. This tool enables users to selectively block certain site components that the extension doesn’t classify as ads by default, such as pop-up videos or prompts.

Which browsers support uBlock Origin?

Chrome and Edge by Google and Microsoft are phasing out their support for Manifest V2. Consequently, uBlock Origin might no longer function or could soon become ineffective. Since the transition is gradual, you’ve got some time to explore and switch to an alternative solution if needed.

In simpler terms, Firefox has confirmed it will keep functioning with uBlock Origin. According to a recent blog post by Mozilla, they plan to preserve WebRequest API support within Firefox, which implies that uBlock Origin will carry on working efficiently even after the transition to Manifest V3.

Instead of relying solely on uBlock Origin as your content blocker, consider exploring other options as well.
