Microsoft Edge users held over 10 billion chats with Copilot in 2024

As a long-time Windows user who has tried numerous browsers over the years, I must admit that Microsoft Edge has grown impressively on me. It started out as a mere default browser, but it has since evolved into a reliable and efficient tool for my daily web activities.

In 2024, Spotify Wrapped and Steam Replay gave us a peek into gaming preferences on PCs and favorite tunes listened. However, what about web surfing? Microsoft steps up with Edge’s Year in Review to reveal how people are utilizing the default browser on Windows 11, along with its versions across other platforms.

It’s fun to joke about people only using Edge to download Chrome, but millions of people use Microsoft Edge. It’s the default browser on Windows 11, which is where it has the largest foothold. There are also versions of Edge on macOS, iOS, and Android, though they aren’t nearly as popular. Microsoft did sneak in a mobile-specific stat though when it shared that Edge mobile prevented over 1.8 trillion trackers in 2024.

Looking at the Edge Year in Review through a web browser will showcase intricate visuals. However, for those interested solely in the numbers, here they are:

  • 10 billion AI-powered chats with Copilot
  • 800 million articles, stories, and updates through MSN
  • Over 1.4 billion phishing, malware, and scam attacks blocked
  • Over 7.3 billion passwords protected each month
  • Over 7 trillion megabytes of PC memory saved using Sleeping Tabs
  • Over 1.8 trillion trackers prevented on Edge mobile
  • 46 million messages and files shared through Drop
  • 38 trillion characters translated

Microsoft didn’t disclose information about the number of individuals who downloaded Google Chrome using Edge, and it didn’t emphasize that Edge held a notable 13% market share among desktop Pornhub users. However, that seemingly modest percentage grew by 12% on Pornhub from 2023 to 2024. In contrast, Apple’s Safari experienced a significant decrease of 40% in market share during the same period. It’s plausible that Microsoft didn’t boast about its growth among desktop Pornhub users because roughly 70% of the site’s traffic comes from mobile devices.

Amongst a small group, I am one who relies on Microsoft Edge as my primary web browser, both on Windows 11 and Android. This browser serves me effectively because I’m deeply entrenched within the Microsoft environment, ensuring seamless syncing of my data across all my devices via Edge.

Among the numerous excellent web browsers available in Windows 11, Arc stands out as particularly captivating due to its user-friendly interface for content consumption, ideal for reading articles or watching videos. However, when it comes to working from home, I find Microsoft Edge more suitable.
