Microsoft launches Mixed Reality Link for Windows 11 — connect your PC to your Meta Quest headset!

  • Mixed Reality Link for Windows 11 is now available to download.
  • The app is in preview, but lets you connect your PC to your Meta Quest headset.
  • You can setup up to three virtual displays and control your PC inside your VR space.

As a seasoned tech analyst with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent development between Microsoft and Meta is quite intriguing. The Mixed Reality Link for Windows 11 is a bold step towards bridging the gap between virtual reality and desktop computing, much like the integration between Apple Vision Pro and a Mac.

As an analyst, I recently discovered that Microsoft is paving the way for seamless integration between their latest Windows 11 operating system and Meta Quest headsets, similar to the harmonious blend of Apple Vision Pro with a Mac. Excitingly, Microsoft has just unveiled the initial preview of the Mixed Reality Link app for Windows 11, allowing users like myself to effortlessly establish a connection between our Windows 11 PC and Meta Quest headgear.

Currently, it’s possible to get the Mixed Reality Link app from Microsoft Store. This application will walk you through the steps to connect your Meta Quest 3 or 3S headset with your Windows computer. Regrettably, this functionality is only compatible with the recently released Meta Quest 3 and 3S models, so users with a Quest 2 or Quest Pro will have to wait, at least temporarily.

As a tech enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that we, at Microsoft, are teaming up with Meta to bring this groundbreaking experience into the public preview phase today! We can’t wait to hear your valuable feedback from our community.

Connecting wirelessly to your Windows 11 PC from your Meta Quest 3 or 3S VR headset transforms the Quest into a powerful productivity tool. Although Microsoft has discontinued support for Windows Mixed Reality, it’s reassuring that the Windows desktop can still be accessed within other virtual reality environments.

Since the app is still in its pre-release phase, it’s possible you might encounter some glitches or problems while using it. Both Microsoft and Meta are eager for user feedback during this early access period, so don’t hesitate to inform them if you come across any issues.

There’s also a known issues list:

  • On a Teams call, a call comes in, but the toast to accept the call does not appear.
  • Audio may not transfer properly to an expected device or may play on a PC and headset simultaneously after establishing a connection.
  • Pressing CtrlAltDelete will end your connection so you can quickly get back to your PC.
  • Existing connections may show as available when they are not.
  • Three active displays may restrict the quality if the PC doesn’t meet the PC graphics requirements above.

As a tech enthusiast, I’m excited to share that the kinks in our latest project are expected to be sorted out within the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, why not jump on board and grab the Mixed Reality Link app from the Microsoft Store? Let’s dive into this amazing mixed reality experience together!
