Microsoft overhauls Clipchamp for iOS before shipping even a beta version of Clipchamp for Android

What you need to know

  • Microsoft shipped a major update to Clipchamp for iOS recently.
  • The update includes a refreshed design that is better for mobile devices and includes several new features.
  • Smart reframe, in-app voiceover recording, and AI-powered text to speech are among the new features in Clipchamp for iOS.
  • Microsoft has yet to release an Android version of Clipchamp.

As a long-time user of Clipchamp for my video editing needs, I must say I am thrilled about the recent update to their iOS app. The new features are nothing short of impressive, from Smart Reframe and AI-powered text-to-speech to the expanded library of stock audio and video. It’s a pity that Android users like myself have been left out in the cold, though.

On all Windows 11 computers, you’ll find the video editing tool called Clipchamp already installed. However, if you own an iPhone, this is currently the only way to utilize Clipchamp on a mobile device, as there isn’t yet an Android version available. Notably, Microsoft has recently updated the iOS app of Clipchamp with a revamped design, advanced AI features, and an expanded library of stock audio and video.

On iOS, the latest update for Clipchamp has brought it to version 2.0.14, marking a substantial leap as it surpasses the 2.0 milestone. Interestingly, Microsoft launched Clipchamp as a 2.0 app on iOS before there was even a 1.0 version available for Android devices. Intriguingly, at this point, there’s no version of Clipchamp available for Android, not even in beta testing.

But for Clipchamp fans and users with iOS devices, it’s time to update the app. A refreshed design makes it easier to edit videos on mobile devices. The update also adds new templates based on trends, more transitions, and increases the number of video effects available. Smart reframe lets you crop landscape footage into portrait orientation while tracking a subject and the app now supports recording voiceovers directly within the app.

As a researcher, I suspect that Clipchamp would be an effective tool for creating videos tailored for platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or other social media outlets. Although I haven’t tried it on an iPhone yet to confirm this firsthand, based on the description of its features and update screenshots, the app appears robust and well-suited for the task at hand.

Where is Clipchamp for Android?

On the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section at the base of Clipchamp’s mobile app page, there’s an inquiry concerning whether Clipchamp is compatible with Android. The webpage answers, “no, the Clipchamp mobile app functions exclusively on iOS devices as of now. Keep updated.” However, this response has remained consistent since at least March 2022, as indicated by archived versions of the page stored by the Wayback Machine. This prolonged wait for an update might be a bit too long.

As an avid user, it feels like Clipchamp on iOS is tailored more towards Apple devices, particularly iPads, rather than a broader range of Android tablets. The truth is, Clipchamp has been optimized exceptionally well for the iOS mobile platform, and I can’t help but wonder why this refined interface isn’t being extended to Android devices too. Given the current design, it seems feasible that with some adjustments, the layout could work seamlessly on Android as well.

Of course, actually coding the app is different than designing it, but Microsoft has over 70 apps available for Android phones. I’m sure they could make Clipchamp for Android if it were a priority. As far as I know, there isn’t even a public-facing beta for an Android version of Clipchamp.
