In line with Microsoft‘s advancements in artificial intelligence, a research group is unveiling a model called Muse, designed to produce segments of gameplay and control actions. This innovative project, developed by the Microsoft Research team stationed in Cambridge, UK, involves collaboration with the neighboring Xbox first-party studio, Ninja Theory.
The model was educated utilizing data derived from the 2020 multiplayer game Bleeding Edge, developed by Ninja Theory, and it’s stated that the data collection process was done ethically. All personal details linked to players were removed before the data was utilized.
According to Gavin Costello, technical director at Ninja Theory, it’s fascinating to observe how Microsoft Research has employed the Bleeding Edge environment and its data to innovate with fresh methods in an ever-evolving artificial intelligence sector.
Katja Hofmann, head of Microsoft Research’s Game Intelligence team, demonstrated gameplay clips generated by the initial model versions to me. Initially, these brief snippets quickly broke down, becoming a hazy mess. However, with further training, the model became more refined, better mimicking character movements such as flying and destroying power sources on the map.
In simpler terms, the most recent edition of Muse produces gameplay footage (viewable on Xbox Wire) at a lower resolution of 300×180 and runs at 10 frames per second. Hofmann explains that this is done to make sure training functions effectively for the tiniest models available.
The team is particularly thrilled about Muse, primarily due to its ability to interact with real-time elements. During a live demo, Hofmann displayed how controller actions influence the game in real time and the model promptly adjusts its response. Moreover, Hofmann showcased effortlessly moving a power cell into the gameplay, which the model immediately recognizes and incorporates.

Fatima Kardar, Vice President of Corporate Gaming AI at Microsoft, explains that this type of research is aimed at “equipping” game developers with the ability to decide whether or to what extent they want to utilize the technology. Meanwhile, Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft’s Gaming division, expresses his enthusiasm for employing AI models in game preservation efforts, allowing these models to analyze games that are stranded on outdated hardware.
In an intriguing development, Dom Matthews, head of Ninja Theory’s studio, mentions they will not incorporate AI-generated content in their games. Instead, they are keen on leveraging technology to enhance the speed and ease with which their creative team works. As Matthews explains, ‘We are interested in harnessing technology to streamline game creation, allowing our talented team to concentrate more on what truly sets games apart: human creativity.’ For Matthews, games serve as a platform for creators to connect with their audience through interactive storytelling, and this fundamental aspect of game development is crucial.

From my tech-savvy perspective, the possibilities of AI are vast, particularly when it comes to simplifying and speeding up the work of game developers – a tool worth considering. However, when it comes to AI-generated gameplay footage or AI-adjusted game narratives, I must admit, my excitement wanes a bit.
It seems quite likely that these advancements will uncover some intriguing aspects, perhaps novel methods for examining player movement and route finding in games. However, I sincerely hope that the Microsoft leadership takes heed of creative minds like Matthews and doesn’t forget the fundamental human element that underpins game development.
