The game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle requires an impressive 125GB of storage on a PlayStation 5’s Solid State Drive (SSD), making it impossible to fit onto a standard Blu-ray disc.
For the Sony system, a single disc can store approximately 100GB. Some creative developers have circumvented this limitation by distributing their software across not one, but two discs.
In a move that seems less than ideal for PlayStation 5 users, Microsoft and Bethesda opted for an unconventional approach when transporting Indiana Jones’ game, packing only about 20GB of data onto a single disc.
A YouTube video demonstrates the step-by-step process of opening the package, but it’s important to note that for this game release to function properly, an active internet connection is necessary. If you attempt to insert the disc without being connected online, unfortunately, you won’t be able to play even a single moment of the game. Instead, you’ll receive a message instructing you to connect to the web so you can download the rest of the game.
It’s clear that this situation brings up valid concerns about preservation, as any potential disabling of Sony’s servers in the future could make your game unplayable. While it’s very unlikely to happen soon, actions like these essentially negate the need for physical media altogether.
It’s puzzling as to why they didn’t fit more of the game onto the disc itself, given that there seems to be no justification for such a large 100GB download when the majority of the game can easily accommodate on a single Blu-ray disc.
It’s not good enough.
