Microsoft is no longer offering its base model ($999) for the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, instead focusing on introducing more compact and affordable Surface PCs.
Yesterday, Microsoft unveiled its fresh lineup: a 12-inch Surface Pro and a 13-inch Surface Laptop, with affordable price points of $799 and $899 respectively. Meanwhile, the premium models, Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, are now available at the Microsoft Store starting from $1,199.
The base prices for both the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 have changed starting from this week, coinciding with the market debut of the more budget-friendly Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch models from the same company.
It seems that Microsoft hasn’t increased prices as a result of tariffs, at least not immediately. Rather, they have taken down the initial $999 configuration from their online store. The rest of the product models are still available at their original prices.
Initially, both the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 could be purchased with a Snapdragon X Plus processor, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD storage priced at $999. However, now, the standard model includes 512GB SSD storage for $1,199.
Previously, Microsoft offered the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 for $1,199 with a 256GB SSD. However, since the discontinuation of the 256GB model, these devices now begin at twice the storage capacity and an additional $200 compared to their previous prices.
Considering the current timing, it seems as though Microsoft is trying to present their newly launched compact Surface PCs as more attractive options in terms of pricing.
If Microsoft had persisted in offering the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 for $999, the price gap among the smaller devices would have ranged between $100 to $200, contingent upon the specific model chosen.
Now, there’s a significant price gap as the starting price for the new model is $1,199. This sets the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Pro 11 apart by $400, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Laptop 7 have a price difference of $300.
A cunning strategy is employed to make the latest compact devices appear more affordably priced by positioning them alongside the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, which have consistently been exceptional values, often reduced significantly during sales to as little as $799.
To ensure the latest models of Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are meaningful, it appears Microsoft is phasing out the lower-priced versions of their flagship Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 that were available for $799.
For now, third-party vendors continue to offer the original $999 version of the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7. This means you can still purchase these devices at Best Buy and Amazon if you’re looking for them, with potential discounts available as well.
