As a long-time Windows Phone Link user who heavily relies on this feature for seamless integration between my smartphone and PC, I must admit that the recent Android 15 update has left me feeling a tad disheartened. The convenience of having 2FA codes, messages, and notifications synced across devices has been a game-changer in my productivity workflow, especially when juggling multiple accounts and projects at once.
The Windows Phone Link, one of the standout features in Windows 11, is set to lose some functionality with the Android 15 update. With the arrival of Android 15, Google has introduced a novel action that automatically conceals confidential notifications from being transmitted to unverified notification receivers, which will impact Phone Link on specific devices.
Starting with the most recent Android operating system update, certain notifications such as two-factor authentication codes and sensitive data, will no longer be visible in the Phone Link application for affected users. Microsoft has issued a notification within the app to inform users about this change. Here is the message they receive:
Now with the newest Android upgrades, the Phone Link feature no longer displays confidential details in its notifications, ensuring greater privacy and security for you.
For users who’ve downloaded the Link To Windows app from Google Play Store, this update will only apply. As per Android expert Mishaal Rahman, devices that originally come with Link To Windows should be capable of continuing to transmit secure notifications if properly set up by both Microsoft and the device manufacturer. Notably, Samsung phones can still transfer these confidential alerts.
If your phone doesn’t have Phone Link pre-installed, it seems there’s no alternative solution available. This implies that if you own a device such as the Google Pixel, Sony Xperia, or Nothing Phone, you will lose the ability to view two-factor authentication codes and other confidential notifications when synced with Windows Link for Phones, after updating to Android 15.
The Phone Link function has been included in Windows operating systems since the introduction of Windows 10, under the name Your Phone. This feature allows you to view your phone’s notifications, applications, messages, and calls straight from your computer, thereby minimizing the need to retrieve your phone from your pocket while using Windows, enhancing productivity.
Lately, this tool enables you to employ your smartphone’s camera as a webcam on your computer and also synchronize files between your PC and phone directly from File Explorer. It’s quite a potent resource, but the upcoming Android 15 updates might diminish its effectiveness for many users.
