Microsoft is planning to discontinue its OneNote app for Windows 10 by October 14, 2025. This means that after this date, the app will no longer receive any technical support or updates.
That date may sound familiar since it is also when Windows 10 support ends.
From now on, you won’t find any more bug fixes or security updates for OneNote on Windows 10. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t the only news today.
Moving forward, OneNote for Windows 10 will cease to receive bug fixes and security updates. But let me emphasize that this is not the headline of the day.
For quite some time, we’ve been aware that OneNote for Windows 10 would eventually be phased out. Now, we have more specifics on how this transition will unfold in the upcoming months.
Microsoft shared this message recently:
Moving forward with our goal of improving OneNote’s seamless and contemporary interface, it’s important to note that support for OneNote on Windows 10 will cease on October 14, 2025. To ensure smooth operation within your organization, we recommend transitioning completely to the current version of OneNote (OneNote M365) at your earliest convenience and removing the outdated application immediately. This migration guarantees ongoing access to the most recent features, security upgrades, and an updated user experience.
The message has been displayed in your Microsoft 365 Message Center and has been archived by the Microsoft 365 Message Center.
The message further mentions that from June 2025 onwards, the performance of OneNote for Windows 10 during synchronization may become slower. This could potentially affect real-time collaboration and access across multiple devices.
This July, Microsoft plans to display notifications inside the OneNote app on Windows 10, encouraging users to transition to the updated version of OneNote, commonly referred to as OneNote M365.
When does OneNote support end?
Over time, Microsoft has introduced various editions of OneNote, but they’ve been steadily transitioning towards a single, unified version. This migration, which began some years back, is expected to reach significant stages this current year.
In 2022, Microsoft started advising users to transition from OneNote on Windows 10. Exclusive new features like Copilot are only available with the updated version of OneNote.
Initially, the OneNote application on Windows 10 was the standard version. However, the updated, unified version of OneNote now offers a modernized design, access to the most recent features, and enhanced security features.
Though I frequently express disapproval when Microsoft discontinues apps or services, the transition to a single, consolidated OneNote platform is distinct from those instances. Unlike other cases where the service gets phased out, OneNote will continue to exist.
Microsoft has aimed to blend well-liked aspects from the OneNote for Windows 10 into its universal OneNote app. Additionally, the revamped OneNote now harmonizes more aesthetically with the design of Windows 11.
As a tech enthusiast, I’ve been following the transition process, and it’s been a gradual move towards the unified OneNote app. Microsoft has given us ample time to adapt, with years to make the switch. However, in the last few months, Microsoft will be taking a more assertive approach regarding OneNote for Windows 10, as they prepare to discontinue support. But don’t worry, there’s been plenty of notice about this upcoming change.
