Microsoft is preparing to release two compact variations of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro, intended to be lighter and more portable for users seeking a travel-friendly computer. These devices will reportedly be premium models boasting display sizes approximately 11 or 12 inches in diameter.
Back in December 2023, I initially shared news about Microsoft’s compact Surface Pro. Just recently, I managed to verify that alongside it, they were also developing a more compact Surface Laptop model. Rumors suggest that both these devices will be officially unveiled in the upcoming weeks.
It seems Microsoft plans to release these compact Surface PCs around April or May. While it is expected that new business-oriented Surface hardware will be presented on January 30th, it remains uncertain whether the smaller devices will be introduced at this event or saved for a later, more consumer-focused occasion.
According to my resources, these compact Surface models are rumored to sport premium designs similar to their larger counterparts. It’s been indicated that the smaller Surface Pro is intended as a rival to the 11-inch iPad Pro, suggesting it will likely include a high-refresh-rate screen, pen input compatibility, and a detachable keyboard accessory of its own.
It’s plausible that the compact Surface Laptop could take over from the Surface Laptop Go, offering features such as a backlit keyboard, a more advanced touchscreen, and an all-metal body similar to its larger counterpart, the Surface Laptop. However, I’m uncertain if the smaller Surface Pro is intended to replace the affordable Surface Go.
As a fan, I’ve heard that the upcoming compact models will be fueled by Snapdragon X/Plus SoCs, which is expected to enable Microsoft to offer these devices at a competitive price point between $800 and $900. Despite this affordable pricing, they promise to deliver impressive performance and battery life. Interestingly, these new devices will coexist in the market with the current Snapdragon-equipped Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 series.
Next month, Microsoft intends to release business-focused versions of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, powered by Intel’s Lunar Lake processors. These models are expected to come in larger screen sizes and will not be available for general consumers. For the first time, the Surface Laptop 7 will offer a configurable 5G option.
It seems that Microsoft’s primary attention is almost exclusively on the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, their top-selling product ranges. Remarkably, these models will have undergone three updates each within a year by March, which is an unusually high frequency of updates in such a short span.
According to my information, both the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 are being worked on right now. It’s rumored that these devices will utilize the forthcoming Snapdragon X2 SoC, which is anticipated to make its first appearance towards the end of this year.
Microsoft officials declined to comment on these plans.
