In certain European regions, Microsoft has discontinued offering the Surface Pro 11 bundle that includes a power supply. This decision aligns with EU efforts to minimize electronic waste, though it implies customers will need to spend an additional €90 to acquire the complete package, as the power supply must be purchased separately now.
Last year when the Surface Pro 11 was introduced, it came with a power adapter in every region. However, recently, there’s been an update in EU markets, which has been enforced within the past month. Now, Microsoft is delivering the Surface Pro 11 only with a compact and slim box that contains the Surface Pro tablet and a quick user guide, without the power supply.
This modification intends to lessen electronic waste and carbon footprint since the packaging has been made compact and lighter. Not every purchaser will receive a new charger with their device as it’s only necessary for those who don’t possess a Surface Connect charger or prefer not to use an existing USB-C charger on hand. This is beneficial if you already own a Surface Connect charger, or plan to utilize a USB-C charger that you already have at your disposal.
This update aims to minimize e-waste and carbon emissions by making the packaging smaller and lighter. Not every buyer will receive a new charger with their device because it’s only required for those who don’t currently own a Surface Connect charger or prefer not to utilize an existing USB-C charger they have at hand. At the Microsoft Store during checkout, you’ll find an option to add a power supply priced at €90 or £80 (currently reduced significantly). This power supply is the 65W version, capable of providing rapid charging for both the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7.
The Surface Laptop 7 hasn’t experienced the same updates, at least not so far. However, the modifications on the Surface Pro 11 are due to an EU requirement aimed at reducing electronic waste (e-waste), which is detailed in its 2022 Radio Equipment Directive. At this time, these updates do not extend to laptops.
Currently, this guideline pertains to cell phones and tablets, suggesting that manufacturers can choose whether to include a charger with their products as an option rather than a standard feature. It’s important to note that this directive does not require companies to charge for the charger, but some companies like Microsoft have opted to do so in certain cases.
In European markets, it’s not just Microsoft that stopped including power supplies with their tablets; Apple and Google have followed suit, only providing a USB-C cable. It remains uncertain whether the Surface Pro 11 will come with a USB-C cable or if no cable will be included at all in its packaging.
