Midsomer Murders’ Original Sidekick Shocks Fans by Becoming New DCI Tom Barnaby on Stage!

Daniel Casey has has quite the promotion in the new Midsomer Murders stage tour.

As a movie enthusiast, I am thrilled to announce that I, who once portrayed Sergeant Troy in the original ITV run from 1997 to 2008, will now step into the lead role of DCI Tom Barnaby in the fresh Midsomer Murders production titled “The Killings at Badger’s Drift.

Starting from October 2025 through April 2026, the stage adaptation of Caroline Graham’s popular series will travel to various UK theaters, with Casey as its lead director.

When given the opportunity to step into the role initially portrayed by John Nettles, the actor expressed: “I hadn’t anticipated returning to the peculiar realm of Midsomer, filled with eccentric and enigmatic characters harboring their hidden, sinister mysteries. Therefore, receiving an invitation to essay the legendary character of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby in this fresh stage rendition of The Killings at Badger’s Drift came as quite a shock.

While rehearsing the play, it becomes apparent that the characters possess a natural flair for drama, making them ideal for a stage performance.

He commented: “Reminiscing about it revived some delightful memories from a joyous period of my career, playing Sgt Troy. Working alongside the exceptional John Nettles was not only nerve-wracking but also exhilarating, and stepping into his role as Barnaby presents both a sense of apprehension and immense anticipation.

It’s delightful to know that the old mystery of murder and scheming in Midsomer will finally be unraveled by Daniel, in this fresh theatrical adaptation of Badger’s Drift.

As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but express my sheer delight in seeing Daniel breathe such vibrant life into young Troy in the initial TV adaptation of the book. It’s truly captivating and I’m thrilled that he’s been given the opportunity to spearhead the investigation in this theatre adaptation.

News about the staging of this play, helmed by Guy Unsworth, was quickly accompanied by updates on the return of a television series, said to have started filming in March.

This year has given us a break, as we didn’t film in 2021. However, we were busy filming last year. But the good news is that we are back to filming in 2022! We have been working on four fresh stories since March of this year.
