Amazon Prime Video has revealed its principal actors for an upcoming series based on Stephen King’s novel “Carrie.” The role of Carrie will be portrayed by Summer Howell, who gained recognition through her work in “Cult of Chucky,” while Margaret, Carrie’s mother, will be played by Samantha Sloyan, fresh from her appearance in “The Pitt.” Amazon Prime Video disclosed additional stars on Tuesday as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, expanding the list of actors we were previously aware of. Given that the series was only given the green light in April, it’s moving along swiftly, but with showrunner Mike Flanagan having extensive experience adapting King’s works, this speed might not be unexpected.
I’m a fan who can’t help but marvel at Howell’s remarkable career trajectory. At just 21 years old, she boasts an impressive resume that spans over her childhood acting years. Last year, she graced our screens in Netflix’s original film “Time Cut,” embodying the character Jessica. With a knack for horror roles, Howell seems perfectly suited for the part of Carrie in an upcoming project.
As for Sloyan, she’s no stranger to Flanagan fans, having played Bev Keane in “Midnight Mass.” Her talent continues to shine in Flanagan’s latest production, “The Life of Chuck,” where she takes on the role of Miss Rohrbacher.
On Tuesday, it was officially announced that Alison Thornton takes on the role of Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek portrays Emaline, Amber Midthunder is Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah will play Tina, Arthur Conti assumes Billy’s character, and Joel Oulette steps into Tommy. Earlier reports had confirmed Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle. Howell’s involvement was reported in April, but the deal has only been finalized now.
The reinterpretation of “Carrie,” initially conceived late last year, is not confined to the streaming series format alone; it will deviate from previous adaptations and even the original book in several ways. Amazon Prime Video describes this fresh take as a “courageous and contemporary retelling” of the timeless story, and given its themes, it seems particularly pertinent to set it in today’s world. The narrative of “Carrie” revolves around issues such as abuse and bullying, matters that resonate deeply with students today due to their heightened relevance and chilling impact.
Carrie, King’s debut novel, came out in 1974. The first screen adaptation followed in 1976, and that movie is now considered a classic. A standalone film sequel was released in 1999, with another adaptation following in 2002. The story was remade again in 2013. To add to this, it was turned into a controversial Broadway musical in 1988, which had negative reviews during its short stints on stage.
Even without further explanation, just knowing that Flanagan is involved should be enough to excite fans about watching Carrie’s journey again. This filmmaker has penned the scripts for films like “Doctor Sleep,” “Gerald’s Game,” and “The Life of Chuck,” and his next major project is an adaptation of Stephen King’s epic fantasy series, “The Dark Tower,” which he considers a lifelong dream.
At the moment, Carrie is being developed, but unfortunately, there’s no set date for the series release yet. In the interim, enthusiasts can enjoy Stephen King’s novel in printed, digital, and audio editions, and both the 1976 and 2013 adaptations of Carrie are currently streaming on HBO Max.
