In the initial season of “NCIS: Origins,” two episodes delved into the past life of Mike Franks, airing close together on the 2025 television schedule. The first episode focused on Mike’s bond with his brother Mason in 1969. However, when Mike was revisited in 1982, he mentioned not having a brother. For those who thought Mason perished in the Vietnam War, be prepared for a surprise! The finale of “NCIS: Origins” Season 1 unveiled that Mason is not dead after all. The producers of “NCIS: Origins” spoke with TopMob about incorporating the contemporary version of this character, which originated from a single line about him in the original “NCIS.
In “Cecilia,” the most significant occurrences were Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Lala Dominguez coming close to kissing, followed by Lala’s tragic car accident. However, towards the end of the Season 1 finale, Mike received a call from Mason, who indicated that they needed to discuss events in Vietnam. With the brothers’ reunion now imminent, I questioned the creators of Origins, David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, about what we can anticipate from Mike and Mason in Season 2. North revealed to me:
This story is intriguing because it reveals a surprising twist about Mike Frank – that he has a brother! Up until now, many viewers had assumed that his brother perished in Vietnam. However, as I’ve learned from my discussions with others, this was just an assumption, and the true story is yet to be told.
In “NCIS”, Muse Watson portrayed Mike Franks in 20 episodes spanning Seasons 3 to 15. His character appeared both as a living person and a ghost that Leroy Jethro Gibbs would occasionally encounter, representing his deceased mentor after the “Swan Song” episode. Though we got some insights into Mike on the main series, “NCIS: Origins” is developing a largely untouched backstory with Kyle Schmid playing a younger version of the character. As North mentioned, what initially began as a single line of dialogue from earlier seasons of “NCIS” has now evolved into a Season 2 plotline.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d highly recommend Paramount+ as your go-to platform to catch up on seasons like NCIS: Origins, especially season 1! You can choose between the Essential plan at $7.99 a month or upgrade to the ad-free Premium plan for $12.99 a month, which doubles your streaming library by including Showtime content. Plus, opting for the annual plan gets you two months free, effectively paying for 10 months and getting 12! Check it out now!
Initially, when the flashbacks in “Monsoon” began, I speculated that Mason might have perished in Vietnam, which could explain why Mike turned to alcohol and drugs. But then, when Mike’s partner mentioned someone on the phone claiming to be his brother – a statement Mike vehemently denied – I began to suspect there was more to the story. As it turns out, Mason is alive and well, though it seems their relationship had soured. David J. North went on to say:
As a dedicated cinephile, it’s intriguing to ponder the fact that Frank, a man known for his unwavering loyalty, is still out there somewhere, estranged from his kin. This unknown chasm feels like unexplored territory, ripe for us to steer the narrative in any direction we choose. What captivates me most is the mystery surrounding the event or events that could have driven such a devoted soul to sever ties with his own blood. It must have been something truly momentous to shake Frank’s unwavering allegiance.
During the entirety of “Cecilia,” Mike Franks’ phone kept ringing, but there was never anyone on the other end when he picked up. Eventually, it turned out to be Mason, but he immediately told Mike that his call wasn’t an attempt at reconciliation. As North put it, one of Mike’s most commendable qualities is his loyalty, so I can’t wait to uncover what could have driven him to sever ties with his own brother.
It’s uncertain if the storyline from this plot thread will resurface at the beginning of NCIS: Origins Season 2 or later. However, what we can confirm is that the prequel series is set to come back this fall on CBS, along with NCIS Season 23. We’ll keep you updated once a specific air date has been announced.
