Miles Teller Mourns Death of Top Gun: Maverick Pilot in Plane Crash

As a devoted fan and admirer of Miles Teller’s work, I find myself deeply moved by his heartfelt tribute to Chuck Coleman, a man whose skill, expertise, and kindness touched not just the Top Gun: Maverick cast but the entire aviation community.

Miles Teller is remembering a dear friend.

In a touching tribute, the star of “Top Gun: Maverick” honored Charles Thomas “Chuck” Coleman, who served as their flight instructor during the filming of the 2022 action movie, after he tragically passed away in a plane crash in Las Cruces, New Mexico on October 20th. He was 61 years old.

On October 21st, Teller posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying goodbye to Chuck Coleman with several pictures of them together. Chuck served as our aerobatics flight instructor, playing a crucial role in our preparation for the film Top Gun: Maverick.

Miles emphasized that Coleman was not only an aerospace engineer but also a skilled air show and test pilot. Furthermore, he considered Coleman as a valued friend and partner in their endeavors.

Chuck’s demeanor was relaxed and approachable, making us feel secure with his knowledge at hand,” he added. “He was a gentle soul, modestly confident, and constantly inquisitive about people and our world. Unfortunately, he left us too early, but his impact will endure for all time. Farewell, Chuck, and thank you for the cherished moments.

It was confirmed by both Las Cruces city officials and the Federal Aviation Administration, reported in the New York Times, that Coleman was the sole occupant of his single-engine Extra Flugzeugbau 300/L aircraft when it crashed during a show featuring aerobatic performances, helicopters, and airplanes at the Las Cruces Air and Space Expo.

Regrettably, our Air and Space Expo ended in a tragic manner this past weekend, as shared by Mayor Eric Enriquez in a statement on our Facebook page on October 21. Our sincere sympathies go out to the family and friends of Chuck Coleman during this difficult time.

It has been verified that the incident involving the city of Las Cruces is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Prior to the training of the cast for the movie “Top Gun: Maverick”, Coleman’s website mentioned that he had flown 140 flights in order to help the actors become proficient at flying Navy F-18 Hornets. Coleman has also worked on documentaries, such as “Black Sky: The Race for Space” (2004) and “Black Sky: Winning the X Prize”, and performed stunts for the movie “The Round and Round” in 2002.

As a devoted follower, I can attest that Coleman’s website proudly showcases his impressive aviation experience. He boasts an extensive flight time of more than 10,000 hours, and has graced the skies in numerous airshows. Furthermore, he has provided over 3,000 thrilling aerobatic flights to spectators like myself.
