Actor Holt McCallany, known for his role in Mindhunter, hinted that Netflix might bring back the show, although it may take a different shape than what fans had been expecting.
Ever since the captivating finale of the second season aired back in 2019, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about a potential third season. However, my anticipation was put on pause when Netflix declared last January that the production plans for season 3 were temporarily halted. This decision came as the series’s mastermind, David Fincher, chose to focus on other creative endeavors for now.
It appears that in February 2023, Fincher hinted that the series had concluded permanently. In a conversation with French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, he expressed pride over the first two seasons but noted that the viewership hadn’t reached a level sufficient for Netflix to continue making such a substantial investment.
But now it sounds as if Fincher may have found a new way for the crime drama to come back.
During a recent conversation with CBR to publicize another upcoming project titled The Waterfront, McCallany hinted at the potential return of Mindhunter. He shared that he had a discussion with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and Fincher mentioned there might be a possibility for it to resume as three full-length films, but according to McCallany, this is merely speculation.
“I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”
He went on saying: “I was incredibly grateful and honored to be part of that production. I’d be thrilled if it came back. I believe, as I mentioned earlier, our conversation gave me a glimmer of hope. But for it to happen again, everything – the sun, the moon, and the stars – would have to perfectly align.
He stated: “It’s great news that we have ‘The Waterfront’ at Netflix, and similarly, these films are intended for streaming on Netflix as well.
I believe we can arrange everything regarding dates and logistics, but it depends on whether David has the availability, interest, and satisfaction with the subject matter. That’s a major uncertainty.

Back in 2023, I was part of the enthusiastic crowd that eagerly tuned into the popular true-crime series, which captivated audiences across its two seasons. The show had amassed a loyal following, and it was heartbreaking when we learned about the sudden halt in production for a third season, leaving us bereft.
Previously, Season 3’s director, Andrew Dominik, shared insights on the potential topics that Mindhunter Season 3 might have explored if it were produced.
According to Dominik’s conversation with Collider, the plan for Season 3 was to move to Hollywood. One of them was going to collaborate with Jonathan Demme, while another was going to work with Michael Mann.
Moreover, it was intended to become a significant part of our cultural awareness, or public understanding, known as the spirit of the times.
He mentioned: “If things had gone differently, it would have been… That was the time everyone was eagerly anticipating, as teams begin to emerge from their initial struggles.
