Reports suggest that the recent performance of developer Build a Rocket Boy’s latest game, MindsEye, may have put several positions within the studio in jeopardy. As per IGN, internal emails have been circulated among employees warning them about potential job losses. It appears these warnings were also extended to PlayFusion, a studio that was acquired by Build a Rocket Boy last year. The implications could affect up to 300 jobs across the studios.
In the midst of recent emails being circulated, a report unveiled an intriguing development: this week, our studio head, Leslie Benzies, addressed us during a video call. As confidential sources for fear of job security, he shared his optimism about our studio recovering, hinting at the potential return of MindsEye. In the same breath, Benzies pointed fingers at unnamed saboteurs, both within and outside our company, for the game’s setbacks. I, as a gamer, eagerly await the revival of this beloved project.
It’s intriguing to note that Benzies’ remark about saboteurs mirrors a statement made by Mark Gerhard, co-CEO of the studio, in June, just before the release of MindsEye. Back then, Gerhard expressed his belief on the studio’s Discord channel that the negative sentiment surrounding the title was likely financed by someone.
He stated in another post that some individuals seem to be deliberately working against Leslie and Build A Rocket Boy’s success by criticizing the game and studio in a systematic way. It’s quite noticeable how they employ automated responses or repetitive comments when interacting with any content that we publish.
Approximately two weeks after the first news broke about Build a Rocket Boy potentially dismissing over 100 employees, rumors are circulating that layoffs might indeed occur. This speculation arises from a 45-day consultation period mandated by UK law whenever a company plans to terminate more than 100 jobs within a 90-day timeframe. This process was said to have started on June 23.
Based on expert opinions, the game titled MindsEye has been significantly impacted by unfavorable reviews, resulting in a total player base that barely exceeds 250,000. Out of this number, approximately 150,000 players have been using it on PS5, while around 35,000 are on Steam. The relatively small user base on Steam is causing substantial issues for the game, as one of its key attractions – the Build.MindsEye creation tool that lets players generate custom content – is only available in the PC version of the game.
It appears that the game, MindsEye, received mostly negative feedback due to numerous technical problems it encountered since its release. Shortly after launching, the developers publicly expressed their sadness about the game’s less-than-ideal state on Reddit.
