There’s been quite a buzz surrounding Minecraft Dungeons, the spin-off of Minecraft, ever since it was released – it managed to garner over 25 million players as far back as 2023. However, Mojang, the creators, have kept rather tight-lipped about its future plans. Recent whispers hint that they might be working on a sequel for Minecraft Dungeons.
According to reports from the Datamining team XOXLeak, there’s been talk of a game codenamed “Project Spicewood” in development for two years now. This game appears to be a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons. However, as with most rumors, it’s essential to approach this information cautiously.
Based on the recent leak, it appears that Project Spicewood will feature several new areas: Honeycomb Fields (highlighting Undermill, Farm, Island, Lake, Fields, and Forest), Desert (including Cliff, Fortress, Mountain, Village, and Icelagoon), and Forest (with Deep Dark Entrance, Outpost Entrance, Witchzone, and Shady Forest). Additionally, a town is expected to serve as the primary player hub.
By September 2023, Mojang had declared that update 1.17 would be the final content release for Minecraft Dungeons, and the development team responsible for the game was shifting to another Minecraft-related endeavor. This schedule aligns rather neatly with XOXLeak’s post, as it’s been approximately two years since Mojang made their announcement.
“Mojang announced that the 1.17 update was the last for Minecraft Dungeons, indicating their team has shifted focus onto fresh projects within the Minecraft universe. Consequently, no additional features or content updates are anticipated for the game. However, they aim to deliver new experiences in the Minecraft world, allowing the team to remain creative and pursue games they’re enthusiastic about, as demonstrated with Dungeons.
Ever since its debut in May 2020, “Minecraft Dungeons” has garnered significant popularity. By February 2022, the game’s player count soared to an impressive 15 million, and by September 2023, Mojang announced that a staggering 25 million players had ventured into its dungeon-crawling world.
Another spin-off, known as Minecraft Legends, has gained significant popularity. Back in April 2023, Mojang announced that the game had garnered over 3 million players since its debut. Throughout its run, it received numerous updates, but in January 2024, Mojang declared that the Snow vs Snouts update would be its last.
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that the core Minecraft game has achieved massive popularity. A report from October 2023 showed that the game had sold over 300 million copies since its initial release in 2011, making it the best-selling game to date, with Grand Theft Auto V following closely behind at approximately 210 million copies sold and Wii Sports coming in third with around 82.9 million units sold.
