What you need to know

  • Mojang Studios has been working on a native PS5 version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
  • This isn’t as exciting as it sounds, as it mostly involves improving the performance and render distance.
  • That being said, Mojang has confirmed the new PS5 version is officially launching on Oct. 22.
  • Current PS4 owners will receive the PS5 version for free, and PS5 beta testers will gain access to all Minecraft cross-play features.

As someone who has spent countless hours digging, building, and battling mobs in the pixelated world of Minecraft, this news about the native PS5 version feels like a long-awaited breath of fresh air…or perhaps a blocky, pixelated one. After years of hoping for next-gen optimizations, such as ray tracing, it’s disappointing that we’re not getting anything groundbreaking with this release. But then again, who am I to complain? I still enjoy the simple joy of crafting a pickaxe and exploring the endless possibilities of a randomly generated world.

Here’s an interesting tidbit! Contrary to popular belief, Minecraft isn’t specifically designed for next-gen consoles. Instead, it runs on backward compatibility across Xbox and PlayStation systems. While this isn’t much of a hurdle on Xbox due to its smooth cross-generation compatibility, it can be a letdown overall.

The popular game Minecraft will be available on the PlayStation 5 starting October 22, 2024. This update is free for all existing PlayStation 4 owners. While this news marks a shift in Minecraft development by Mojang, it might not be as thrilling as it initially appears.

Better performance for PS5 players, and little else

For quite some time, numerous Minecraft console players have wished for Mojang Studios to enhance the game for optimal performance on modern consoles like the Xbox Series X|S, incorporating features such as ray tracing. Some even believed that the Xbox Series X|S, being the primary ecosystem for Minecraft (at least theoretically), deserved superior treatment. Regrettably, these improvements never materialized and there’s no indication they will. This new release won’t alter that fact.

The PlayStation 5 could soon have its own native version of Minecraft, though it might not offer Xbox Series X|S Optimized features. However, you can expect Minecraft to run more smoothly on PS5, with improved resolution at 4K and a consistent frame rate of 60 FPS. Additionally, the game will likely offer extended render distances. While the Xbox Series X|S already provides these enhancements, the PS5 version is expected to perform even better due to its native support. However, there won’t be any additional enhanced features or ray tracing on the PlayStation 5 version.

As a tech enthusiast thrilled about PS5 gaming, I’m excited to share that the performance of Minecraft on PS5 is getting even better! And if that wasn’t enough good news, Mojang has got something special planned for Minecraft fans – their first-ever enhanced Minecraft Live show is coming soon! Who knows, we might even get a sneak peek into the upcoming live-action Minecraft movie. The hype just got real with the release of its first intriguing trailer. Mark your calendars, as the free PS5 update for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition drops on October 22, 2024! For more details, head over to Minecraft.net and stay tuned!
