Age of Mythology: Retold is a refreshed, high-definition version of the 2002 original from Ensemble Studios. It features updated visuals for every game unit, a fresh layer of paint, and brand-new animations. This makes it both a delightful trip down memory lane for longtime players and an inviting starting point for newcomers who are interested in exploring this classic game.
Essentially, Age of Mythology sets itself apart from the traditional Age of Empires series by concentrating on a limited number of civilizations, each offering substantial gameplay differences. This game introduces gods, mythical creatures, and abilities inspired by folklore and legends, such as those from the Chinese, Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and even Atlantean cultures. We believe it’s when this series truly shines at its peak.
One innovative aspect of Retold could be described as blazing a trail for isometric real-time strategy games on PS5, offering an alternative, smoother gaming experience that deviates from the traditional mouse and keyboard controls often preferred in this specialized genre. The game presents a complex, initially daunting control scheme and a variety of play options, which might seem unfamiliar or even blasphemous at first glance, but once mastered, it functions effectively.
Instead of frantically giving commands to the group of villagers essential for maintaining the economy and military necessary to defeat adversaries, this task can be automated, allowing AI to handle the tedious work (and countless clicks) needed to keep them productive. By setting predefined percentages, your economy will continue functioning smoothly while you concentrate on construction and expansion. Furthermore, recurring build orders, command groups, and attack moves make controlling with a controller an enjoyable experience.
The remake encompasses additional content from the original game that some players might have overlooked, such as the Atlantean and Chinese factions. In total, it offers four distinct single-player storylines to experience. Furthermore, it includes the ever-replayable skirmish mode, Mythical Battles, daily missions to accomplish, online multiplayer, and you’ll find a wealth of entertainment for your investment.
There are a few downsides, of course. Learning how to implement all the above involves some trial and error. While there are tutorials that teach players the specifics of how each faction works, we feel like one specifically for console controllers would have been useful. It took us about a half dozen hours to really become comfortable and competent, which might be asking a bit much for a casual player.
As a seasoned gamer looking back, I’ve got to admit that strategy games have evolved significantly over the past 25 years. Age of Mythology, a game that’s had a significant impact on the genre, might seem quite basic to play these days, which is ironic given its historical influence. Don’t get me wrong; I appreciate the additional campaigns they added, but I’m not sure if I’d find myself going back to it regularly.
