Mini Review: Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector (PS5) – Don’t Sleep on This Deeper RPG Sequel

The second installment of Citizen Sleeper, titled Starward Vector, expands upon the foundation laid by the original game, offering an engaging and demanding sci-fi role-playing experience. Discussing its details without revealing too much can be tricky, but if you enjoyed the first game, you won’t want to miss the sequel.

As a sleeper android, whose mind has been artificially designed to mimic human consciousness, you find yourself on the run, accompanied by a friend and an old, creaky spaceship that serves as your only sources of support. In the outskirts of a galaxy engulfed in war, the air is thick with tension and danger, forcing you to navigate through this hostile environment while finding means to survive and create some semblance of existence for yourself.

A significant portion of the game is conveyed through text, yet luckily, it’s exceptionally well-crafted. With only a few typographical errors scattered about, it effectively paints a vivid image of the environment, circumstances, and characters surrounding you.

Beyond that, you venture to different places in search of possible team members and methods for earning funds and resources. Any encounters necessitate a skill test, utilizing one of the dice rolled at the beginning of each day. A higher number on the dice increases your odds of a successful result.

In this setting, the complexity of the dice system has been significantly enhanced. Besides making tactical choices, you’re also required to monitor your stress level, as it can potentially harm or even make the dice inoperable. Furthermore, there’s a chance that the dice might malfunction, providing the least favorable outcomes for a fruitful interaction.

In-game assignments, or contracts, are the places where the latest enhancements to the dice system become most significant. If a character experiences stress, they might be incapacitated, and unfavorable dice rolls could initiate timers, reducing the duration you can stay in these situations.

As a dedicated gamer, I absolutely love the thrilling concept of the storyline that compels me to leap between diverse locales, creating an exhilarating rhythm and tension. Initially, this mechanic keeps things engaging, but over time, it softens, allowing for more exploration at will. Eventually, I find myself amassing all the wealth I could ever desire, which is undeniably gratifying yet somewhat diminishes the game’s nail-biting challenge.

Fundamentally, you’ll find yourself drawn to Citizen Sleeper 2 for its engaging characters, captivating storyline, and immersive decision-making scenarios, and it delivers on all fronts. The appeal of assembling an eclectic team and venturing into a slice of the game’s universe is strong, and with numerous character classes and upgrade options available, there are ample incentives to revisit the game multiple times.
