As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Naiad has left quite an impression on me. Having played through countless titles, from action-packed shooters to soulful puzzle games, this unique indie gem stands out for its breathtaking visuals and thought-provoking narrative.
As an enthusiast, I’d like to share my excitement about Naiad, a captivating puzzle game masterfully crafted by the talented solo developer, HiWarp. You find yourself stepping into the role of Naiad, a charming river spirit, who embarks on a journey to assist fellow creatures while meandering through a network of interconnected rivers in pursuit of the ocean.
This captivating game is divided across 16 episodes, each set within unique ecosystems. For about six initial segments, you’re essentially drifting along a leisurely river, with the freedom to engage or disengage at your will. While there aren’t many puzzles necessary for progression during this time, the in-game perks strongly encourage solving them. The challenge level seems unusual as it shifts from feeling much like a relaxing exploration game into a true puzzle game.
As you advance and come nearer to human civilization, things grow increasingly grim. Pollution is rampant, hindering your ability to sing – your main tool for solving puzzles and communicating with animals – and causing a sluggishness in your movements. Intriguingly, the vividness of colors around you begins to fade as well, transitioning from bright blue streams to sewers filled with debris and oil slick.
As the levels progress, the puzzles become increasingly intricate due to the hazards that humans have created in what was once an untouched ecosystem. Although I appreciate the added difficulty after breezing through the initial stages, the controls can be quite frustrating. Coordinating movement and singing is tricky at times, and determining which objects are interactive and how to interact with them can be puzzling.
These negatives are outweighed by the sheer beauty of the title thanks to the incredible use of colour, as well as a relaxing, whimsical soundtrack and sound design. Taken as a whole, Naiad is a title with incredible art and sound as well as something to say, even if the gameplay isn’t always firing on that same level.
