Mini Review: Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip (PS5) – A Simple, Delightfully Silly Sandbox

In simple terms, “Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip” is a brief yet delightful open-world journey filled with one child’s dream of driving into outer space. Once he gets his own car, Terry aims to speed it up so much that it can break free from Earth’s gravitational pull. To achieve this, he must explore every nook and cranny of his hometown and lend a helping hand to the residents along the way.

As a fan, I found it delightfully straightforward yet eccentrically charming. The game boasts an appealing cartoonish aesthetic, and for the most part, it doesn’t demand much from you. My primary task was to traverse the map in search of Junk, which could be exchanged for car upgrades upon accumulation. These enhancements increased the duration of Terry’s vehicle’s speed boost. Once fully equipped, I could embark on a vertical journey into space and conclude my adventure. The game can be comfortably completed within approximately 10 hours, making it an incredibly relaxing playthrough experience.

Before reaching the final stage, you’ll encounter numerous collectibles known as Junk pieces, engage with different gameplay aspects, and complete a variety of tasks. The money you earn by smashing boxes and containers can be traded for new gear such as a net to catch insects or a glider that opens up new areas. Although some items have more restricted uses than others, you’ll likely need most of them at some point for various missions.

The game offers a flexible, open-ended structure, enabling you to explore the town and its inhabitants at your own pace. Most of the tasks revolve around fetching items, yet they incorporate enjoyable twists; one task includes car theft (and splitting the earnings), while another requires you to search for blueprints to acquire unique pets as collectibles. Some missions transform into mini-games, which might not be spectacular but serve as refreshing interruptions from the regular gameplay.

Although the game’s elements may not be entirely new, it’s the unique presentation that sets it apart. The dialogue is genuinely humorous, the plot quite endearing, and the physical comedy aspects are enjoyable. However, a few technical glitches occasionally disrupt the seamless gameplay experience. Finding the hidden collectibles can be challenging (though a special Hat for detecting junk comes in handy), but the game excels due to its concise nature and lighthearted atmosphere.
