Mini Review: Warriors: Abyss (PS5) – A Decent Descent into Hell for Roguelike and Warriors Fans

In essence, Warriors: Abyss seems like Koei Tecmo attempted to create their own less expensive version of Hades, using remnants from previous games such as Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. However, it should be noted that it doesn’t fall short in satisfying the cravings. Although Abyss has a few rough patches, it offers a solid and addictive exploration into the roguelike genre. The series’ traditional hack-and-slash elements harmoniously fit within this new game.

Initially, the mechanics might appear slightly confusing as you get started, given that the first hour or so is filled with tutorial messages that can feel cumbersome and frequent interruptions from Enma (your guide, also known as the ruler of Hell). However, once you grasp the game’s systems, you’ll discover a straightforward yet rich gameplay loop that remains consistently engaging. Whether you’re building temporary power during gameplay or enhancing your forces in the Hall of Bonded Souls, the experience is consistently rewarding.

In transition periods between stages, there will be an option for automatic optimization in your construction process. Although this might eliminate some aspects of personal control and management, it’s a beneficial addition that allows you to quickly return to the main gameplay – the thrilling horde-hacking action, which is the core experience in any Warriors series title.

In essence, Abyss seems to recycle many elements such as characters, visual effects, music, and soundscapes from its earlier versions. Although the final output is playable, we can’t help but notice that a touch of unique style or pizzazz could have significantly enhanced the game’s appearance, making it more distinct from other versions in the series.

As you navigate the distinct, albeit unremarkable, four tiers of Hell, they may become overloaded with visual effects, leading to occasional drops in frame rate when things get incredibly chaotic.

These nervous feelings often accompany you when venturing into unfamiliar territories, yet they were never significant enough to hinder our mission. However, it’s unfortunate that the game’s title doesn’t flow smoother considering its simple graphics, and its emphasis on engaging, swift controls is crucial for an optimal gaming experience.
