Missing Child's Mother Charged After Burglary Attempt

Abdul Aziz Khan’s mother is facing legal trouble.

14-year-old who had disappeared in 2017 was recently discovered in Colorado alongside his mother Rabia Khalid and her companion Elliot Blake Bourgeois during an unsuccessful burglary attempt on a vacant house up for sale. Subsequently, both Khalid and Bourgeois have been accused of various crimes, including kidnapping in the second degree, identity theft, and trespassing.

On February 23rd, Khalid, aged 40, and Bourgeois, aged 42, were confronted by officials following a report made by the homeowners of an empty house in Highlands Ranch about suspicious behavior. When authorities questioned them, they claimed to be working with a realtor, as stated in a release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. However, after four hours of interrogation, the officers were able to determine their true identities.

During their ongoing probe, officials discovered both Khan (then 5 years old) and an unidentified minor in a car close to the residence. Subsequent interrogation and investigation confirmed that he was indeed a highly prominent child who had gone missing.

Since 2017, when a custody battle ensued between Khalid’s biological father and mother (Khan), an arrest warrant had been outstanding due to her disappearance along with her son. On the scheduled court day that year, it was Khalid—the non-custodial parent—who vanished with his son.

Khalid and Bourgeois were arrested at the Douglas County Jail, charged with second-degree kidnapping, forgery, identity theft, giving false information to officials, and trespassing. Their arrest followed what was initially a “routine trespassing call” according to the Douglas County Sheriff. No details have been shared about their plea yet, but they are presumed innocent until proven guilty, as stated in a press release. Each of them is being held on a $1 million bond.

Aziz’s family expressed immense happiness as he has been found at last. They issued a statement to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, expressing gratitude towards everyone who stood by them during the past seven years. They particularly acknowledged the exceptional work of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in resolving this case. Now, they request privacy so that they can progress as a family and heal together.
