Mission: Impossible 8 Confirms One Character’s Return (With a Major Promotion)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for action-packed blockbusters and a knack for predicting plot twists, I must say that the latest developments surrounding Mission: Impossible 8 have piqued my interest significantly! The return of Angela Bassett’s character, Erika Sloane, in an even more influential role as President of the United States promises to add a new dimension to the franchise.

In the debut trailer for “Mission: Impossible 8”, it’s clear that Angela Bassett is back in the series. She previously joined the team as CIA Director Erika Sloane in “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” (2018), and now seems to have a new role within the franchise. Approximately 50 seconds into the “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” sneak peek, we see Sloane exiting Air Force One on an airfield with soldiers saluting her. This suggests that Sloane has ascended to the position of President of the United States, which means she’ll likely have a significant stake in what Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) is doing.

The storyline of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is kept secret, but it’s likely that the movie will carry on with Ethan Hunt’s world travels as he and his team work to prevent a disastrous event. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this latest installment in the “Mission: Impossible” series features Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby, Mariela Garriga, Henry Czerny, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell and Frederick Schmidt. Joining the returning cast are new faces Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Katy O’Brian, and Stephen Oyoung.

In the sequence of films known as the “Mission: Impossible” series, the eighth installment will be titled differently from “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”, which was set to release in 2023. Paramount Pictures opted to rename “Dead Reckoning” on Paramount+, excluding the “Part One” from its subtitle. This means that the eighth movie, instead of being known as “Mission: Impossible 8”, will have a unique title all its own.

In the final installment of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the IMF team find themselves in a high-stakes global chase to prevent the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales) from assembling “the key” that commands an advanced AI known as ‘Entity.’ This superweapon could revolutionize cyber warfare. Despite significant setbacks, Ethan successfully obtains the key. However, the ultimate objective – recovering the Entity itself – is reserved for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The AI’s source code was submerged on a Russian submarine that sank under the Arctic ice, making its retrieval a challenging endeavor in the upcoming film.

Is it possible that “The Final Reckoning” in the title implies this is the last film in the Mission: Impossible series featuring Tom Cruise? With eight movies under its belt, this franchise has certainly been prolific, especially given that it’s been centered around a single actor. While Tom Cruise’s stardom might sustain more Mission: Impossible films, after a while, the “Impossible” in the title could become less relevant. Given Cruise’s age, it seems plausible that Ethan Hunt might soon consider hanging up his spy gear for good.
