The article contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
In a surprising turn of events, the director of Mission: Impossible – Fallout (previously known as The Final Reckoning) has shared that an intended post-credits scene was omitted from the final cut. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in what is believed to be his swansong for the high-octane series. This marks nearly 29 years of portraying the legendary character, during which he has undertaken numerous life-threatening and perilous stunts for each Mission: Impossible film. The eighth installment picks up where Rogue Nation (Dead Reckoning) left off, with Ethan and his team persistently working to thwart the Entity. In a triumphant conclusion, Ethan manages to outwit the Entity, only to vanish into obscurity to ensure it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
In a chat with USA Today, director Christopher McQuarrie disclosed that during the making of The Final Reckoning, there was almost a post-credit scene. He mentioned they had conceived a “closing sequence” for the movie. But after showing Tom Cruise the final ten minutes of the eighth installment, I (the director) realized that this part marked the end of the movie and decided it was best to scrap the filming of the post-credit scene. This decision came about halfway through production.
I went to Tom and told him, ‘Typically, I’d ask you to watch the entire film before showing you this, but we’re preparing to film the final scene in a few days. Take a look at this part.’ He replied, ‘Go ahead and cancel our work for Saturday, as this is the last scene of the movie. This is it.’
McQuarrie chose not to disclose what the coda would entail, as he felt it could potentially be used for a future film.
“I’m not going to say because it could end up in another movie.”
What The Cut Post-Credits Scene Means For The Mission: Impossible Franchise
Many Still Doubt That The Final Reckoning Is Cruise’s Final Movie In The Franchise
In a departure from usual practice, The Final Reckoning didn’t include a post-credits scene. However, a recent disclosure by McQuarrie has sparked curiosity about what such a scene might have entailed. To wrap up the story, it shows Grace giving the device to Ethan for trapping the Entity, and then Ethan retreating into the shadows. This seems to be a fitting conclusion for Tom Cruise and his iconic character, as it was emphasized throughout the film’s promotion prior to its release.
Although The Final Reckoning is generally regarded as Tom Cruise’s last Mission: Impossible film, there remains uncertainty about whether it truly marks the end of the series. While Cruise himself has indicated that this would be the final installment for the franchise, several cast members from Mission: Impossible feel optimistic about his potential return as Ethan. This belief is shared not only by the cast but also by audiences and critics, who are skeptical that the Mission: Impossible series will conclude with The Final Reckoning.
McQuarrie didn’t elaborate on what the post-credits scene would have shown, but it seems it might have provided insights about Ethan. Moreover, there’s a possibility that this scene could be utilized in another film down the line as he suggests. At present, this is just speculation, but it appears that Tom Cruise’s involvement in the Mission: Impossible series will be temporarily halted since he has numerous other projects either underway or in the pipeline, such as the yet-untitled Alejandro González Iñárritu film and Top Gun 3.
Our Take On The Cut Mission: Impossible 8 Post-Credits Scene
I’m Curious What The Post-Credits Scene Could Have Been
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I had the privilege of watching “The Final Reckoning,” and though it has its flaws, there are subtle signs suggesting this could be Tom Cruise’s swansong in the Mission: Impossible series. The film is filled with nods to previous installments, even delving into the origins of the Rabbit’s Foot from the third movie. Yet, this latest plot twist leaves me wondering if it sets the stage for Ethan’s comeback, given that Cruise himself opted out of filming it.
As a movie enthusiast who can’t get enough of the Mission: Impossible franchise, I find myself pondering over the director’s subtle hint that there might be more films to come. The Final Reckoning seems to suggest that Ethan Hunt and his teammates are still in the game, leaving room for Tom Cruise to reappear when least expected. It remains to be seen whether he will choose to rejoin the action, but the intrigue surrounding the post-credits scene has certainly planted a seed of anticipation in my mind.
