It’s undeniable that Tom Cruise is among the most influential movie stars globally, and over several decades, it’s the Mission: Impossible series that has consistently demonstrated his talent and expertise.
Over the course of seven films spanning nearly three decades, Tom Cruise has portrayed IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, who is often tasked with executing perilous missions and pulling off breathtaking feats of daring, frequently accompanied by a group of allies, some of whom are reliable while others may not always be trustworthy.
Absolutely, the previous release, titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning from 2023, was marketed as the first half of a two-piece series and concluded with a significant plot twist, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the sequel ever since.
Despite the new title for the eighth movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, replacing Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, it appears that the narrative continues to unfold in the upcoming film.
In November 2024, we got our first official trailer. Then, during the Super Bowl broadcast on February 9th, 2025, a brief 30-second sneak peek was released, offering another look at some fresh scenes and recurring characters like Pom Klementieff’s Paris. This preview also interspersed glimpses of these new moments with iconic sequences from the series’ past.
The trailer, together with its title, hints that this could be Tom Cruise’s final appearance as Ethan, a possibility he has not yet addressed directly. In the closing seconds of the preview, Ethan is heard saying “one last time,” suggesting this might be his farewell performance within the franchise, though it’s customary in these movies to keep fans guessing.
During an interview with Empire, Cruise admitted that he faced a couple of health hazards while filming. He fainted during a scene shot on the wing of an airplane at a height of 10,000 feet.
When you lean out of the cockpit, traveling at speeds between 120 and 130 miles per hour, you’re not taking in oxygen,” he clarified. “So, I had to learn new breathing techniques. On occasion, I would faint due to lack of oxygen; I was unable to regain consciousness and reenter the cockpit.
When is the release date for the upcoming movie in theaters, and who else from the cast will join Tom Cruise this time around?
Delve into my take on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2, but be aware that this piece may unveil significant plot points from Part 1. Enjoy the read!
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning release date
The sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, titled Part 2, is planned for release on a future Wednesday, specifically the 21st of May in the year 2025.
Initially scheduled for release on August 5, 2022, the movie has encountered setbacks due to worldwide limitations, primarily because of the disruption caused by the pandemic in coordinating consecutive shoots for Part 1.
The filming started in March 2022, however, it had to be halted once more because of writer’s and actor’s strikes. Eventually, it resumed and finally wrapped up by the end of 2024 permanently.

Without a hint of shock, it’s been announced that Tom Cruise will be returning to his role as Ethan Hunt in the upcoming movie. Undoubtedly, he’ll strive to perform jaw-dropping stunts, aiming to surpass the legendary motorbike leap off a cliff from the first installment.
Ethan will once more team up for his challenging assignment with old associates Luther Stickell (portrayed by Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), as well as Hayley Atwell reprising her role as the recently introduced IMF agent Grace from Part 1.
Notably absent, it seems, is Rebecca Ferguson, famously known for her role as Ilsa Faust. If there are any plans for flashbacks, she might reappear, but sadly, her character was fatally written out in Dead Reckoning.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the comeback of several captivating characters from Part 1 that left a lasting impression on me. Among them is Esai Morales portraying the menacing villain Gabriel, Shea Wigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as the intriguing CIA agents Jasper and Degas, and the mesmerizing Pom Klementieff, who brilliantly played the enigmatic assassin Paris – a character who managed to escape death’s grasp at the climax of Part 1.

In a continuation of the storyline, we’ll see Henry Czerny reappear as the IMF director Eugene Kittridge, while Rolf Saxon will once again take on the role of CIA analyst William Donloe, a character introduced in the original Mission: Impossible film.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be part of an ensemble that’s expanding with some talented newcomers. Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, and Katy O’Brian from Love Lies Bleeding are among those who will also grace our set.
So far, details about these newly introduced characters remain scarce, but as reported by Entertainment Tonight, actress Hannah Waddingham (of Ted Lasso fame) hinted at her character being a significant and capable figure in the upcoming movie.
In the meantime, Angela Bassett, known for her role as CIA director Erika Sloane in Fallout, returns following COVID-related travel restrictions that prevented her from appearing in Part 1.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning plot
![](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2024/03/MI8-e46f9f8.jpg)
The movie’s storyline remains undisclosed for now, but it is clear that it continues immediately after the happenings in Part 1, where Ethan and his companions managed to secure a key believed to have the power to govern the Entity.
Equipped with the understanding that a key opens the compartment containing the submerged computer on the sunken ship Sevastopol, Ethan, Benji, Luther, and Grace are preparing to rush there, all the while anticipating encounters with different adversaries led by Gabriel.
It appears quite plausible that the Entity will carry on wreaking chaos until they near control over it, making this task far from simple. In fact, we can say it’s beyond challenging – it’s a mission that seems impossible!
When more plot details emerge, we’ll add them to this section.
Will Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning be the last film?

That’s the big question – and there are still somewhat conflicting reports.
Initially, it seemed like the two-part movie would conclude Ethan Hunt’s story, according to Cruise and McQuarrie. However, their subsequent remarks hint that the story may not end there.
In an interview with Fandango back in June 2023, McQuarrie expressed that this wasn’t going to be the last we see of the IMF. Moreover, he mentioned that he and Cruise had already started brainstorming potential concepts for what the future might entail for the International Mission Force.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I eagerly share Tom Cruise’s aspiration to follow in the footsteps of Harrison Ford, continuing to deliver pulse-pounding action films well into my golden years.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Harrison Ford was referred to as a living legend. He expressed his hope that he too will have a long and prosperous career, as he aims to match Ford’s accomplishments in the next 20 years.
“I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age.”
Based on the movie’s title and subsequent reports, it seems like we might not be seeing Ethan again. His latest comments seem to fan those flames a bit further.
I was recently asked by Empire Magazine about the upcoming film, and I must admit it’s a tricky topic to tackle at the moment because it truly is an experience that needs to be felt rather than discussed. In terms of describing it, all I can say is that it promises to be an epic, emotional journey that encapsulates the essence of the entire franchise.
Regarding McQuarrie, he stated that the ending served as a fulfilling finale to a 30-year narrative thread and expressed his belief that viewers will find the title fitting.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder if Tom Cruise might be preparing to pass the torch to a new leading man. Only time will tell!
