Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Reveals Surprising Callback to Early Sequel

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Reveals Surprising Callback to Early Sequel

As a long-time connoisseur of action-packed cinematic adventures, I can confidently say that the return of the Rabbit’s Foot in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has me positively giddy with anticipation. Having followed Ethan Hunt’s exploits since the original Mission: Impossible graced our screens, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia at this callback to one of the series’ most intriguing MacGuffins.

Mission: Impossible – The Last Stand

At approximately 1 hour, 36 minutes into the trailer for “Final Reckoning,” a glimpse of the Rabbit’s Foot is noticed, as Ethan tightly grips what appears to be a hazardous biological weapon in a shot that strongly resembles one from “Mission: Impossible III.” Interestingly, Ethan doesn’t actually retrieve the Rabbit’s Foot in that movie, but it’s not shown in this trailer.

The scene shown in the trailer for “Final Reckoning” could be an unused shot from “Mission: Impossible III” or a newly created one using de-aging technology on Tom Cruise. To determine the truth between these two scenarios, fans will have to wait until “The Final Reckoning” hits theaters in summer 2025.

What is the Rabbit’s Foot?

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Reveals Surprising Callback to Early Sequel

In “Mission: Impossible III”, the Rabbit’s Foot represents a dangerous biological agent that the antagonist, Owen Davian (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), seeks to acquire and sell illegally. Although crucial to the storyline, the film never explicitly explains the level of global threat posed by the Rabbit’s Foot or its specific nature as a biohazard. Instead, the movie subtly hints at this information, with IMF Director Theodore Brassel (portrayed by Laurence Fishburne) playfully suggesting that he would only reveal the true identity of the Rabbit’s Foot if Ethan promised to continue his work as an active agent.

In the thriller, the fate of the Rabbit’s Foot remains a secret. At the end of the film, Ethan is seen exiting China with his wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan), carrying the biohazard. It’s suggested that he handed over the Rabbit’s Foot to the IMF off-screen, but its location or caretaker in Mission: Impossible III is never disclosed. Possibly, the upcoming movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, will shed light on these longstanding questions after 19 years.

Why is the Rabbit’s Foot in The Final Reckoning?

Viewers may not understand why the Rabbit’s Foot appears in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” until they watch the sequel. It could be that the movie just uses the biohazard as a tribute to some of Ethan’s earlier triumphs, as part of a series of callbacks. Given that The Final Reckoning is said to involve Ethan on his most perilous mission yet, this theory seems plausible. However, it’s also possible that the Rabbit’s Foot could have a significant impact on the plot of The Final Reckoning.

In the upcoming movie, we’ll find Ethan on a mission to complete what he began in “Dead Reckoning” and dismantle the Entity, an artificially intelligent threat capable of annihilating humanity. Considering this, it’s not unimaginable that the Entity could attempt to trigger chaos with the Rabbit’s Foot before Ethan can intervene. Since we know from “Mission: Impossible III” that the Rabbit’s Foot is a potent weapon, it seems fitting that such a dangerous artifact would catch the attention of an evil entity like the one in question.

Regardless of how it ultimately uses the biohazard, The Final Reckoning has already given itself the chance by simply including the Rabbit’s Foot to answer some of the questions that fans have been asking about it since 2006.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025.
