In this instance, we arrive at what’s claimed to be the concluding movie within the series titled “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” or “Dead Reckoning Part Two.” Instead, it opens with a compilation of the franchise’s most remarkable moments from its predecessors, featuring Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) performing numerous death-defying stunts. This serves as a nod to the past and a hint that there are still more thrilling adventures in store for us.
In this scenario, only Hunt possesses a unique key, shaped like a quadrant, capable of halting the menacing ‘Entity’ from seizing control over Earth’s nuclear arsenal. This Entity, reminiscent of the Terminator, has been rapidly gaining power due to the rapid advancement of AI in recent years, making this plot point seem eerily plausible. One character remarks, “The Entity becomes more intelligent with time,” which can be seen as the opposite of Prince Harry’s growth and development.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the upcoming film, where the only way to defeat the Entity is by accessing a vital source code hidden within a device called ‘Podovka’, located inside a sunken Russian submarine resting precariously atop a deep-sea trench. This underwater marvel is not just another scene; it’s a nail-biting, claustrophobia-inducing masterpiece that serves as one of the film’s two breathtaking stunt set pieces.
However, if you thought that was thrilling, wait until you witness the film soaring into the skies with its jaw-dropping biplane sequence. As promised in the trailers and promos, this aerial showdown is nothing short of spectacular – a dizzying, gut-wrenching spectacle that leaves you on the edge of your seat, especially when viewed on an IMAX screen. This death-defying stunt is certainly deserving of recognition among the franchise’s legendary stunts, although it may have come out just a couple of years too early for Cruise to be nominated in the newly announced Best Stunt category.
All in all, Director Christopher McQuarrie has done an outstanding job orchestrating this cinematic rollercoaster ride that dives deep into the ocean’s abyss and soars high above the clouds, delivering one unforgettable stunt set piece after another.
In this updated version, the loyal, seasoned characters are all present once again – Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett. However, it’s Esai Morales portraying Gabriel who makes a comeback to stir up chaos in the storyline. As speculated to be the final film, there are several nods to the past, one of them being a crucial reference to the very first movie that ties everything together neatly. This new installment continues the series’ tradition of being highly entertaining but differs from its predecessors by focusing more on plot development rather than an abundance of non-stop action sequences and thrilling stunts. In fact, this is the longest film in the series so far, but some fans might find that it’s less likely to be rewatched due to its emphasis on storytelling over action.
Despite facing challenges such as Covid lockdown, the SAG strike, and issues with a faulty submarine, which added significant costs, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” (not The Final Reckoning) stands out as one of the most expensive films ever produced. However, it serves as an impressive farewell for Ethan Hunt, reflecting Tom Cruise’s enduring status as a top-tier actor in contemporary cinema, a position he has maintained longer than any other A-lister, undoubtedly deservedly so.
