Fans of Mission: Impossible have finally been given a sneak peek at the comeback of a character who made a lasting impression in one of the series’ most recognized scenes. The new trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, due out this summer, features Ethan Hunt putting on a mask and seemingly connecting to an entity. A fast-paced sequence unfolds, depicting what Ethan experiences as he connects to the AI system. Among the images shown is that of William Donloe, the CIA analyst who was inadvertently targeted by Ethan’s team during the vault break-in from the first Mission: Impossible film. In this trailer, Donloe sports a full beard and appears worried or puzzled as he encounters an enigmatic visitor at his home.
In the trailer, quick looks at Donloe can be hard to catch if you’re not paying close attention. Take a peek at the images showcasing the character’s appearance in the space provided below:
Whether or not “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” marks the end of the franchise isn’t certain, but director Christopher McQuarrie aspires for it to provide a satisfying conclusion to 30 years worth of storytelling. Promotional materials emphasize that this movie could be a climax for the series, reminding us of significant scenes and visual elements from earlier films. In the trailers, Ethan is shown inspecting Krieger’s knife from the original “Mission: Impossible” film.
Actor Rolf Saxon returns as Donloe in “The Final Reckoning“, making his debut in the franchise since the 1996 original film. His character’s appearance in this movie is a fulfillment of a humorous foreshadowing from “Mission: Impossible“, where Donloe was given the task of monitoring a radar tower in Alaska as a consequence for his involvement in the vault heist, a joke subtly hinted at earlier.
The addition of Donloe to the movie is intriguing because it suggests that The Final Reckoning will tie up loose ends, taking Ethan’s story back to its roots. Given that the character only appears momentarily and out of context in the trailer, it’s challenging to predict his role. However, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning might offer some insights. In the film’s initial scene, the Entity sinks the Russian submarine, the Sevastopol, in the Arctic Ocean. With Donloe being stationed in Alaska, he is close to the Arctic Ocean, suggesting a possible encounter with Ethan and his team as they pursue the Entity’s source code. This time around, it seems that Ethan may collaborate with Donloe to accomplish their mission.
In the thriller “The Final Reckoning”, if Donloe and Ethan cross paths, it could lead to an intriguing power struggle. Given that the U.S. government knows Ethan was responsible for breaking into the CIA vault, Donloe may hold him accountable for his predicament. Their conflict might initially persist, but they might put aside their differences for a common cause. Meanwhile, the villainous Gabriel is hot on the trail of the Entity’s source code and knows where the Sevastopol is located. This could potentially lead to Gabriel causing trouble for Donloe. Even though Donloe may not have a significant part in “The Final Reckoning”, McQuarrie’s plot twists should still make for an exciting scene.
